Friday Program Closes Commencement Week

Fourteen graduates from Myrtle Point High School received diplomas Friday marking the close of commencement week. Principal notes the class excelled in coursework and community service.

Rowena Roberts led the Myrtle Point High 1915 graduation as thirteen regular and one commercial course student received diplomas at The Unique Theatre. Alumni heard Dr. M C Stemmler and attorney C J Reigard urge long term vision, education value, and sacrifice for future earnings.

Wreck of the Claremont Near Coos Bay

Cape Arago lighthouse reports a steam schooner stranded on the jetty at the bay entrance. Initially thought to be the Saginaw, later identified as the Claremont bound from San Francisco to Willapa with fuel oil. F A Kilburn Breakwater and Mitchie dredge Mitchie and Saginaw assist, but early efforts fail to float the vessel.

Sinking of the Claremont Off San Francisco Bay

The Claremont ran aground on the rocks at the end of the south spit near San Francisco after steering difficulties in a northerly current. Coast Guard crews and the Saginaw’s winchman rescued passengers Miss Faulkner Alfred Hark and others using a breeches buoy. Captain Benson blamed sea conditions for the mishap. Adeline Smith could not pull her off the rocks. The vessel is owned by Hart & Wood of San Francisco. tonnage 418, built 1907 in Aberdeen Washington.

Oregon souvenir spoons offered with Enterprise

The Enterprise advertises limited Oregon state souvenir spoons by R. Wallace & Sons made of nickel silver with heavy pure silver plating. Normally 75 cents to 1 dollar, the combination price with a one year subscription is 3.75 dollars. Mail orders add 6 cents for wrapping and postage. in office pickup the total is 1.75 dollars or 1.80 dollars by mail.

Memorial Sunday and Decoration Day Program

Memorial Sunday includes a 11:00 a.m. sermon at the Presbyterian church for G A R and citizens. On Monday May 21 at 9:30 a.m. G A R members and Women’s Relief Corps meet at the G A R Hall, then march to the cemetery to decorate and scatter flowers. Lectures and readings follow at Unique Theatre at 1:00 p.m. J G Johnson will speak and Lincoln’s Gettysburg address will be read by Lyle Nosler.

Coos County Tester Examinations Dates Set

In Oregon a new law requires milk and butterfat buyers and Babcock tester operators to obtain licenses. Coos and Curry county applicants must take the tester license exam on May 31 at Coquille, June 2 at Bandon, or June 4 at Marshfield, all starting at 10 a.m. Notify County Agriculturist J. L. Smith if you have not received the circular with study details.

A basket social will be held at the Roland Prairie school house on Saturday evening June 5 with proceeds for general school improvements. All are invited and a school entertainment is planned. Ladies are asked to bring lunch baskets. May Lund, teacher.

Roseburg Mail Delayed By Weather And Roads

The Roseburg mail service faces winter delays due to fallen trees and washouts on the Middle Fork route. Deliveries to Myrtle Point are running late, with wagons arriving around 5:30 p.m. instead of the 8:00 a.m. schedule, as contractors handle increased winter traffic. School Patrons Honor Teacher in Bridge Schools

The 1914 end term was celebrated in Miss Florence Jennings's room with a social afternoon and banquet arranged by district ladies. The surprise event featured a decorated second floor room and a "big feed" of strawberries and cream and cake for the instructor who showed strong winter work.

First Farmers Exchange Sales Day At Myrtle Point Board

The Farmers Union committee reports a successful first Exchange Sales Day at Myrtle Point with about 1900 dollars in property traded. Auctioneer G. W. Rouse oversaw sales including livestock and farm produce while the Ladies Aid sold lunches and pies. Next sale is June 23 with plans for an auction stand stock pens and a formal fee schedule.

Verdict in Panter appeal to be rendered soon

Captain John K. Bulger expects to render a verdict within ten days in the appeal case of T W Panter W A Panter and A R Panter of Coquille. Licenses suspended for 20 months for alleged navigation rule violations involve the vessels Charm Telegraph and Dora. Bulger arrived from Seattle to gather evidence and will depart for home on the Beaver tomorrow.

British Admiralty reports the American steamer Nebraskan captained by Green was torpedoed about 40 miles west southwest of Fastnet off Ireland. Davenport Farm House Destroyed by Fire

The eight room Davenport ranch house on Catching Creek burned to the ground after dinner yesterday. The structure and contents were largely destroyed, with insurance partial. A lounge sewing machine and some cloth remained saved as flames attacked the upper floor. The blaze, likely from a defective flue, pushed embers toward the barn but did not disaster it.
