The Cokville Sentinel reports a Myrtle Point effort to establish a fruit and vegetable cannery. Local organizers seek stock subscriptions to fund a modern plant, promising 50 to 150 local jobs and a home market for crops. A right of way and public support are urged to speed the project.
Francis H. Clarke, president of the Coos Bay Boise Railroad, said in town the line will soon connect Coos County with Roseburg and Idaho’s capital. He blamed delays on local apathy and misjudgments while noting the $7.5 million project would boost local values and investment, arguing the project will quadruple assessed valuation.
Lester Summerlin represents Myrtle Point at the Coquille meeting to set this year’s athletic and debate schedule. Debates are Feb 10 with the outside district winner invited to Coos county. Field meet May 12 at Marshfield with aquatic events possible. Basketball games include Bandon North Bend Feb 2 and other March dates.
W A Adams, injured five weeks ago in a lower river logging camp, underwent surgery last Monday in Bandon by Dr H L Huston and Dr L G Johnson. Surgeons raised a bone fragment pressing on the brain and repaired the leg, which was broken and splintered. The patient, fifty, showed slight rationality Tuesday but recovery remains uncertain due to age.
The Portland Evening Telegram prolongs its bargain day. The usual yearly rate is $5.00, but until February 15 a $3.50 annual subscription is accepted. Oregon Good Roads Association urges passage of five measures to establish a permanent road system. The key proposal creates a three member good roads commission with a scientifically trained highway commissioner whose salary is $4000 annually. The plan promises systematized road construction and measurable improvements across Oregon. Portland correspondence notes strong support from judges and citizens seeking lasting infrastructure gains.
In Bandon the Miocene Oil and Gas Co reports abundant gas from the Bear Creek well. A Tuesday flame rose three feet above the casing when a lighted match was near the well, burning steadily for over an hour. The well is about 850 feet deep in sandstone with an estimated 300 feet more sandstone to drill, boosting promoters' prospects.
The town reports substantial growth with about $30,000 in improvements. Key projects include the Unique theater and moved depot facilities while several new homes rise, notably W. T. Dement Ben McMullen B. C. Shull and the Chandler, Presby terian manse and L. B. Fetter residences, signaling a solid year for Myrtle Point.
