Portland Men to Visit Coos County on Anvil Trip

Optimistic Oregon College Leader Forecasts Growth

President W J Kear of Oregon Agricultural College in Corvallis spoke to Short Course students predicting Oregon’s population will exceed 1.5 million in the next decade and the state college of agriculture will grow to over 4000 students. He said state demands for help with agricultural and industrial problems are rising and the college’s facilities are already inadequate.

Panter and Barklow Take Over Folsom Confectionery

Allen Panter and Levi Barklow gain control of the C. F. Folsom confectionery and ice cream business. The new firm Panter & Barklow begins operations with both men well known locally. Mr. and Mrs. Folsom plan a trip to Portland and other towns before resuming business. Stacy Panter will assist on the river run.

Douglas Road Appropriation Shows Growth in Local Roads

Douglas county increases road funding to 142 426 this year from 54 566 in 1910. The piece notes slower progress east of us but expects rapid improvement ahead. A permanent road to Roseburg could boost regional business exchange by thousands of dollars annually.

River Dredge Clears Near Coquille Progress

The river dredge reaches within miles of Coquille as high water delays some obstructions. A large snow dredge is under construction at Kruse & Banks yards in North Bend to aid the project. The government has appropriated 56000 to widen the channel from Bandon to Myrtle Point.

In Portland Hill interests sold their Malheur Canyon right of way to Harriman forces amid talk of a cross state east west line to Coos Bay. Observers expect a merged route into Coos Bay and a wider expansion into Southern Oregon and California with $200 million in foreign capital backing James J. Hill’s empire building.

Want Wagon Road Planked

The Marshfield Chamber of Commerce and local residents urge planking of the Coos Bay wagon road along its entire length at about 1500 dollars per mile. Meanwhile valley residents hope to rock the Middle Fork road to maintain a durable link to the railroad after planking. Grades are being perfected and with more work this summer the Middle Fork road will be greatly improved, especially with Douglas county end attention to accelerate a permanent roadway.

The Cannery es fats J. W. Searles and S B Hoopes report encouraging progress in securing stock for a Myrtle Point cannery. Nearly all who can are taking shares, and many are ready to invest toward bringing the industry to the area. A few more days will tell the story.
