Powers outlines railroad franchise bid for Coos Bay area

A. Powers of the Smith Powers Logging Co explains to Coos County officials the proposed franchise to run a rail line along the east side of the Coos Bay Coquille road from Bunker Hill to Summit. He promises to start within six months if granted and to build a true railroad serving both logging and general freight, with a 16 foot right of way and gravel-for-road reparations to the county. The plan includes bond guarantees and free gravel hauling for the county to improve nine miles of highway alongside the line.

Permit Grazing Totals for 1916 in Pacific Northwest

A National Forest report shows 1 154 885 head of sheep cattle horses and hogs grazed under permit across Oregon and Washington in 1916. It notes 19 8840 acres eliminated in Routt National Forest Colorado and that about one third of the land is already privately owned.

Farmers Union to Hold Annual Meeting January 6

The Coos County Farmers Union will hold its annual meeting at Lundy Hall for officer elections on the first Saturday in January. A big dinner is planned and an open meeting will follow inviting all farmers whether or not they are union members.

Coos and Curry Cheese Men Organize in Coquille

A meeting in Coquille gathered cheese factory men as the Coos and Curry cheese organization forms. At least fourteen factories will be represented with officers led by President J. D. Carl and Vice-President A. W. Cope. Directors include N. W. McDonald and L. M. Strong. The area boasts over 3,000,000 pounds annual butter output, rivaling Tillamook.

Obituary of A E Harrison Dies After Illness

Albert Edwin Morrison known as Bert Harrison died on Christmas Day at Mercy Hospital North Bend after eleven days of pneumonia fever. Born June 24 1876 near Sebastopol California he was forty years six months and one day. Survived by two brothers and five sisters his parents and one brother predeceased him. Two California sisters Mrs Ellen Huntley and Mrs Nannie Collier were at his bedside. Funeral at 1 30 yesterday in the care of Elder Thos Barklow with interment at Myrtle Point cemetery.

Mount Hood Railroad ships record fruit carloads

Hood River Oregon December 21 Mount Hood Railroad reports unprecedented fruit shipments this season. The line from Hood River to Parkdale has moved over 600 carloads of apples, about half to Portland and California in box cars. Refrigerator cars to the East carry the same rate as box cars.
