Alley Improvement Bid Held Up at Council Meeting
At the council meeting last Monday the bid process for alley grading and paving was discussed. Langston Construction Co. submitted the sole bid of 65 cents per cubic yard for grading and 1.30 dollars per square yard for paving, with the award delayed until September.

Fire Alarm Responds To Express Car Fire Near Depot
At about 7:00 Tuesday evening the alarm sounded for a fire in the express car of the Arnold Amusement Co near the railroad yards by the depot. The chemical engine and hose car teams acted quickly, the car’s leaky pipe causing the blaze. Gas from the lighting plant was also burned away, but otherwise little damage occurred.

Railroad Strike Situation Remains Unsettled in Reports
Late reports on the impending railroad strike show no definite outcome. Variances range from a strike within a week to a definite postponement for thirty days. Railroads in several sections ordered agents not to accept perishables or livestock that cannot reach destinations by September 2 and warned long distance passengers of possible delays.
