The piece notes Portland baseball scores seen from afar, Oregon voters backing initiative measures, and the potential for renewed Mexican war coverage. It mourns the death of former Secretary of State and Governor Frank W. Benson, and favors riverboat service in Myrtle Point with the Panters family operating two boats, Dora and another vessel, boosting freight and passenger access. It hopes for improved river channel work linking Coquille and Myrtle Point to welcome summer traffic.
A fragmentary column mulls human foibles and social rituals. It notes grandstanding, admit- ing fault, and rivalries, then shifts to lighter quips about lodge meals, reflections, attire, and a farmer’s wisdom. The tone resembles a playfully pithy opinion piece.
The piece muses on leisure time, horseshoes, and family life with wit. It extols Herbine as a tonic for a torpid liver, claiming it energizes the blood and bowels, restores cheerfulness, and is sold by N. G. W. Perkins for 50 cents.
Ellis Miller, son of E. R. Miller of Lobster Hill, shot and killed a ferocious panther threatening his cattle while alone on a range. He then returned with dogs to clear another large panther at daybreak, earning a $10 bounty for the first kill.
Pauline Aussicker disputes a misprint about her health leading to retirement. She explains a Portland move offers better pay and may pursue further study. Also mentions a reader letter about a conductor Wilford Adams recovering from rheumatism after using Foley's Kidney Remedy sold locally.
J B Stobie of Salem brings his Percheron colt John LeBlanc No 69 639 to Myrtle Point, registered with the Percheron Society of America. The colt won a premium at the state fair and first at the Salem horse show among 200 entries. Stobie plans to close his stock at a large Salem ranch and may relocate to Coos county. His wife hails from Camas Valley, and Keror, the colt’s sire, is known in Roseburg.
The ad claims Foley Kidney Pills contain concentrated ingredients with therapeutic value for relief and cure of kidney and bladder ailments and urinary irregularities. It describes the pills as antiseptic tonic and restorative and warns to refuse substitutes. Sold by N. G. W. Perkins.
