Banquet Honors Benson High School Teams at Opera House

A large crowd attended a Saturday banquet at the Benson Opera House honoring the basketball and debating teams. Students served tables, decorations featured school colors, and a program followed with toasts, songs, and a drill by sixteen 16 year old girls from Coos County.

Butcher Is Fined For Impure Meat Sale In Marshfield

George W. King once of Myrtle Point now operating a Marshfield meat market was found guilty of selling impure meat by a Marshfield jury. He was fined $60 with the city to pay costs except jury costs. His appeal to the circuit court is planned. The trial drew a large crowd and lasted late. A reward offer of $1000 for proof of diseased meat was invoked. the complainant may seek to collect.

Oil prospects brighten at Miocene Oil Bear Creek well

The Miocene Oil and Gas Co. reports small oil shows at Bear Creek and the well drilled to about 1200 feet is in oil sand and rock. Promoters grow more confident as excitement rises in the oil region and indications suggest a paying strike may be near.

Park Engages Myrtle Point School Staff for Next Year

At the last school board meeting Superintendent A T Park was reelected for the coming year and Claude G Giles was engaged as high school principal. Other hires include Miss McCracken, Miss Robbins, Mrs Whitaker, Mrs Short and Miss Neer with uncertain needs for an eighth grade teacher. Giles will keep his legal practice until summer. Miss Aussiker retires for health reasons. The district may extend the term to nine months to complete work.

Hazel Dollar Arrives as Largest Ship to Enter Coos Bay

The Hazel Dollar, the largest vessel ever to reach Coos Bay, arrived Sunday to load about 4 000 000 feet of lumber at the Smith mill for China. Half will be loaded here before heading to Puget Sound to complete the cargo, with a crew of forty Chinese sailors and a 1 000 ton coal bunkers for fuel. The ship, 89 feet longer than the Nana Smith, drew about 15 feet with ballast and required ten days of loading aided by forty longshoremen. Captain Olean of the Nana Smith piloted it into the bay.

A Hazel Dollar class ship will visit Coos Bay about monthly in the future to load lumber for foreign ports. The recurring calls are expected to draw public attention to Coos Bay as an emerging important port.

Child Injured by Logging Train Near Cunningham Creek

A child of R H Armstrong at Ansen Bros logging camp was run down on Cunningham creek last week. The infant lay on tracks as the train rounded a curve. The brakeman signalled the engineer to stop but the signal was missed. The child was pushed to the track center to avoid being killed as a car passed over, leaving severe lacerations to the arms and shoulder.

Frank Morse of Coquille is seeking to recruit power users to adopt electricity for power. If turnout meets a threshold he will operate day and night, offering cheap steady heat with reduced problems tied to gas and steam engines, benefiting small power requirements.

State Forester to Enforce New Forest Fire Law

The state will restrict fires as part of a new forestry law to be distributed as pamphlets. A closed season from June to October bans outdoor fires except under strict regulations with penalties. Married at Fishtrap Unites Andrew Patrick and Mary Cornwell

Mr Andrew Patrick and Miss Mary E Cornwell were married at the bride’s parents home in upper Fishtrap on Thursday April 6 at 11 am. Rev Thos Barklow of Myrtle Point performed the ceremony in front of relatives and friends. The couple will reside at Riverton.
