A disturbed 14 year old boy, found in a Miami airport waiting room, nonverbal yet not mute, is under psychiatric examination as authorities seek clues to his unknown past and an alleged abductor who disappeared with him. Police and doctors describe gross psychiatric disturbances and mystery surrounding his background.
A distressed teenager was found sitting motionless at Miami International Airport with all clothing labels removed. Unable to speak or reveal how he arrived, officers searched his pockets and found only three pennies and a tissue packet. Investigators suspect he was abandoned with no traces left behind.
The Associated Press reports frost and freezing lows across western and central Iowa with Davenport at 44 degrees the warmest, Atlantic hitting 28, Council Bluffs 31, and Sioux City 32. Skies to stay fair through Saturday as eastern areas cool, with highs 50s to 60s and a chance of scattered showers Sunday.
Viet Cong forces attacked in regimental strength about 300 miles northeast of Saigon near Bong Son. US planes and artillery drove back the Reds with heavy losses. Vietnamese army sources report about 600 guerrillas killed while government losses were moderate amid jungle hills north of Qui Nhon.
News brief reports that Pope Paul VI will be accompanied by 10 cardinals on his peace pilgrimage to New York on October 4. Five of the cardinals will be Americans, per church sources.
President Johnson announced a new treaty with Panama after 18 months of talks. The 1903 treaty will be abrogated and Panama will gain a share in administration and operations, with sovereignty recognized over the Canal Zone area.
Chicago reports that the IW A Sheaffer Pen Co of Fort Madison Iowa will sell to Textron Inc for more than 19 million dollars subject to stockholder approval and a satisfactory mutual agreement. Shareholders would receive 11.25 dollars per share bringing the total to 19.36 million for 1 720 991 shares outstanding. Walter A Sheaffer II, chairman, said the merger will speed growth and expand in the United States and internationally. The firm was founded in 1912 by W A Sheaffer who developed his fountain pen while a Bloomfield jeweler.
President Johnson directs a major overhaul of federal civil rights efforts to better coordinate anti discrimination. The plan expands attorney general and labor department roles while abolishing two existing bodies. A six point program outlines changes to enforcement, dispute conciliation, and private sector nondiscrimination pledges.
The Associated Press reports eight additional fatalities from Iowa roads, spanning Thursday and today. Victims include Jean Barr 36 of Detroit who died in Sioux City hospital from injuries from an Aug. 2 crash that killed her husband Abiron 37. Blanche Enstrom 38 of Junction City Kan died when her car left Highway 76 south of Sloan and struck a tree. Albert Decker 45 of Junction City injured. Robert Lekwa 59 of Hampton died in Mason City from a collision near Sheffield. Sterling H. Scott 53 of Waterloo killed in a two truck crash on Highway 30 near Cedar Rapids. Donald Dennis 22 of Cedar Rapids perished in a Cedar Rapids two car crash. Grandon Burnett 62 near Rudd died after a tractor overturn. Anna Maria Fuhr 59 of Rock Rapids died after a car and semi collision. Bert Bollinger 72 of LeMars died from injuries suffered in a Rock Valley two car crash.
At the United Nations in New York, Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko denounced U S Viet Nam policies as aggression and urged immediate withdrawal of American troops. He backed the Viet Cong and North Vietnam, warned of long term consequences, and called for end to bombings and a return to the 1954 Geneva accord.
NEW DELHI AP Pakistani troops violated the cease-fire in two places across Kashmir and attacked an Indian police post in the southern sector. Indian security forces repulsed the assault at Ashtar, northwest of Jaisalmer, with further intrusions reportedly still under review by the defense ministry.
Dallas born Betty Bateman wins reinstatement by Braniff after secret marriage discovered in 1964. Arbitrator orders full seniority and benefits restored, signaling a breakthrough against compulsory no marriage rules. ALPA notes significance amid long battles since 1946.
The Senate sent to President Johnson a bill authorizing 1.785 billion dollars for a second year of the war on poverty. The roll call was 46 to 22, with Democrats advancing a measure that doubles last year’s 793 million and exceeds Johnson’s request by 285 million. Critics charged politics and mismanagement. governors lose veto power over three antipoverty programs as Shriver may override gubernatorial protests.
The Senate approved virtually intact 3.143 billion dollars for foreign aid after one day of debate by a 59 to 21 vote. Only a 50 million dollar reduction occurred. The bill heads to conference to reconcile House and Senate versions for the 1966 fiscal year.
