Windshield Shattered As United Flight Lands Safely

Des Moines AP United Air Lines flight 881 from Chicago with 60 passengers diverted to Des Moines Municipal Airport after a nighthawk struck the copilot’s side of the windshield. A six by twelve inch hole and dent appeared. Pilot Capt. PB Miller copilot C J Young and engineer D F Specht were treated for minor facial cuts and released. Passengers, including Iowa Farm Bureau members returning from Europe, remained unharmed. Cabin depressurization occurred and emergency procedures were followed before a safe landing.

IOWA CITY AP The Johnson County grand jury indicted Dennis R DeCosteau a 20 of West Liberty for manslaughter in the deaths of Barbara Jarrard 29 and Diane Jarrard 34 both of Lone Tree killed July 3 when struck by a car while riding bicycles on a county road north of Lone Tree.

Scalise Backs Denial of Iowa Land Tax Credits for Nonresidents

Atty Gen. Dawe rence Scalise says 1985 Iowa law denying agricultural land tax credits to nonresidents is constitutional. Legislature raised credits from 11.25 to 15 million annually but limits apply after January 1 with 1967 payments not going to nonresidents or nonpaying corporations. Comptroller notes uncertainty over nonresident ownership. credits target land 10 acres or more and school taxes above 15 mills. Residents may receive a higher share of claims in 1967 as funds shift.
