Litter Protest Hits Greenwood City Council

Mrs G J Marshall Ur, a Greenwood housewife, showed council members a sack of litter to press for harsher fines. She dumped trash, bottles and broken glass on the chamber floor to illustrate Jitter street mess, urging funds for more litter baskets. The council deliberated the proposal as she left the room.

Doctor to Set Sail to Fulfill Dream

Dr Porter H Smith a 4th generation descendant of New Bedford whaling captains plans to sail with his wife Kay their three children and a volunteer medical technician on the 45 foot ketch Christiania to Central America next month. Aimed at spreading medical knowledge and skills to underdeveloped lands the family will operate as a medical team alongside hospital ship SS Hope entering shallow water inlets inaccessible to larger craft.

Keokuk Masons Save Cornerstone From Library Demolition

Keokuk Masonic Lodge members salvaged the cornerstone bearing S.81 A.L. from the old public library slated for razing for a new shopping center. The stone, laid July 4, 1881 by the Iowa Grand Lodge, included papers of historical interest such as a Keokuk chief image and an 1801 city directory, turned to the municipal library.

Muscatine youths showcase art talents across fields

Alva Runyon, a 27 year Stanley Engineering illustrator, recalls starting as a boy painting advertising posters. Jody Davis, a high school senior now at A.I.C., pursues commercial art and watercolor, sketching buildings and farm scenes with horses. Mrs. Chris Althaus paints in oils at home and donates works to hospital causes, while Lincoln Stanley, a seventh grader at Central Junior High, blends art with science designing space ships and buildings and pursuing stories with drawings.
