Mrs G J Marshall Ur, a Greenwood housewife, showed council members a sack of litter to press for harsher fines. She dumped trash, bottles and broken glass on the chamber floor to illustrate Jitter street mess, urging funds for more litter baskets. The council deliberated the proposal as she left the room.
Newark officials propose locating a new water department building on Easy Street to serve as a temporary City Hall until a future main City Hall is completed on Main Street in downtown.
DES MOINES — American Trucking Associations president John E. Amos told the Iowa Motor Truck Association convention that courtesy by drivers improves safety amid rising auto traffic. He noted National Safety Council figures showing trucks were 11 percent of vehicles in accidents last year while comprising 16.1 percent of all road traffic.
Blythe California AP stuntman Duane Hamlin turns 80 reflects a life of danger and film action. From piloting stagecoaches to fighting in World War I to crashing planes and wrestling gorillas on screen he boasts a career shaped by feats for Hollywood. He now lives alone near Blythe desert ranch awaiting calls while noting his marriages as his riskiest job.
Muscatine High School’s 120 new band uniforms from Ostwald Uniform Corp arrive after years of fundraising and presentations. Band director Charles Kreeb distributes them as students prepare for homecoming activities including a downtown parade and halftime show.
Kathy Lister and De Wagner model Muscatine High School band outfits for the new season. De wears a black pant and coat with purple gold and white trim, grenadier fur hat, white gloves, and spats. Kathy wears a black skirt and coat with white shirt and black tie. The 110 uniforms cost over $12,000, funded by contributions and Bayash presentations.
Dr Porter H Smith a 4th generation descendant of New Bedford whaling captains plans to sail with his wife Kay their three children and a volunteer medical technician on the 45 foot ketch Christiania to Central America next month. Aimed at spreading medical knowledge and skills to underdeveloped lands the family will operate as a medical team alongside hospital ship SS Hope entering shallow water inlets inaccessible to larger craft.
Keokuk Masonic Lodge members salvaged the cornerstone bearing S.81 A.L. from the old public library slated for razing for a new shopping center. The stone, laid July 4, 1881 by the Iowa Grand Lodge, included papers of historical interest such as a Keokuk chief image and an 1801 city directory, turned to the municipal library.
Alva Runyon, a 27 year Stanley Engineering illustrator, recalls starting as a boy painting advertising posters. Jody Davis, a high school senior now at A.I.C., pursues commercial art and watercolor, sketching buildings and farm scenes with horses. Mrs. Chris Althaus paints in oils at home and donates works to hospital causes, while Lincoln Stanley, a seventh grader at Central Junior High, blends art with science designing space ships and buildings and pursuing stories with drawings.
