Southern Pacific Coast Line Limited was three hours late after a train wreck near Los Angeles. Officials reported the derailed coach and freight cars blocking the line while crews cleared the site and restored service. No serious injuries were announced.
Los Angeles May 99 A Southern Pacific Coast Line Limited wreck near West Glendale left one man dead and 22 injured, three fatally. Investigators say wires and missing fishplates on the trestle were placed by a hidden accomplice, with a motive of deliberate sabotage. The dead include M. J. McMahon of Santa Barbara and 15-year-old Frank Taylor. two women from Los Angeles and Cleveland likely to die. A $10,000 reward is posted for the arrest of the wreckers, with officials stating no clues yet.
In Pittsburg last night five men were killed and four fatally injured at the Eliza furnace of Jones and Laughlin Steel Co due to a slip that caused a sudden explosion. Victims include E. B. Willard furnace superintendent and John A. West head blower, with three unknown foreigners among the dead. Willard and West were prominent furnace experts. an escapee says Willard’s head was blown off by the blast.
Decatur hosts the Illinois Grand Army of the Republic department meeting with six affiliated groups. About six thousand visitors attend business sessions and officials report. An afternoon parade features four thousand men in line through the city.
William A. Smith and Richard C. Beile, each known for prior pedestrian feats, begin a walk from St. Louis to Jamestown Virginia for the exposition. They expect to arrive August 19 covering roughly 2,686 miles.
Washington May 22 The comptroller of the currency today issued a call for a statement of the condition of national banks at the close of business May 31. The action seeks updated financial details from all federally chartered banks in the country.
New York May 22. William Ellis Corey president of United States Steel has bought the steam yacht Pantooset from Albert S Bigelow for 195000 dollars. The vessel will sail immediately for Europe where Mr and Mrs Corey will cruise in European waters during their honeymoon.
The failure of E. B. Havens & Co. of New York, members of the stock exchange, was announced today. The firm is not prominent.
Butler asserts global peace nears as Mohonk Conference progresses with expected accord.
Lake Mohonk New York May 22. The thirteenth annual Lake Mohonk conference on international arbitration opens with Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler elected president. Butler urges international morality and a permanent peace framework including a transformed Hague Court and regular conferences to advance global justice.
In Reidsville Georgia on May 72 a mob in search of Flem Padgett after an alleged assault on Mrs Laura Moore opened fire at the Padgett home. Six people including John Padgett and four Padgett family members and James Hare were killed and four others wounded as a gun battle lasted over thirty minutes. The scene ended with the Padgett home heavily damaged and all the Negro family members reported dead.
Oskaloosa Ia May 22 A gift of 400 acres of Louisiana land was presented to the Central Holiness University today by Mr and Mrs D F Shepardson The tract is valued at about 20000 dollars.
George Henry Finch known as the Father of the House of Commons died in London at age after 40 years representing Rutland in Parliament.
The General Synod of the Reformed Presbyterian Church convened in Allegheny, Pittsburg, today with 185 delegates in attendance to start the session.
New York May 22 Charles Prouty of the Interstate Commerce Commission urged the government to directly regulate railroad capital accounts and likely have the interstate railways valued by the government. He proposed a separate railway department for administrative regulation and argued hearings before a neutral tribunal are needed before rate reductions affect property.
Albany May 22 The New York Senate passed Governor Hughes public ties bill creating commissions to supervise and regulate public corporations in New York City and state, sending it to the Assembly for concurrence. In New York City John R Hegeman of Metropolitan Life faced ten indictments for perjury and forgery as the grand jury tied to year end transactions involving loans and transfers with Mercantile and Central Trust Companies.
Benjamin F Trueblood of the American Peace Society spoke on the present status of the international arbitration movement. He urged creating a permanent body of distinguished former presidents or secretaries of state to represent American interests at major conferences, arguing their experience and proper salaries would aid peaceful, orderly diplomacy.
Norfolk Va May 22 The Baptist convention of North America united in a national assembly after a separation over antebellum issues. North South East and West hosts gathered at James town exposition for the first annual session with between 4000 and 5000 delegates. It marks the first time white and colored Baptists met together in the south.
The Kentucky court of appeals declared the Louisville Jefferson county election void overturning the circuit court. It holds the governor may appoint to vacancies and orders an election for all city and county officials next November. The ruling effectfully removes all Louisville and Jefferson county officials.
At the Switch men's Union of North America biennial convention in Detroit on May 22 a resolution unanimously protested the alleged kidnapping of Moyer Haywood and Pettibone and urged President Roosevelt to secure reversal of the decision. The body also urged members to be prominent in politics and to back men who favor their measures regardless of party.
Nine inmates at the Toledo workhouse overpowered guards at a brick machine this morning and broke through the fence, escaping.
President and Mrs Roosevelt and their son Archie will depart Pine Knot this afternoon and travel to Washington. The family travels by train and is expected to reach the capital later today.
A hurricane and tidal wave struck the Caroline Islands on April 30 causing immense property damage and leaving about two hundred people missing. Reports came from Sidney, N S W, detailing the catastrophe and its casualties and wreckage.
A diplomatic dispatch from Guatemala reports four of the men who failed to kill President Cabrera on April 23 have died by suicide. The message reached Washington from Guatemala via a minister. Further details were not immediately available.

New York reports May Irwin actress plans to wed her manager Kart Eisfeldt at Irwin island Thousand Islands New York next Sunday. Irwin and Eisfeldt, both in New York, will travel to the wedding scene Friday. Eisfeldt, 27, has long been linked with Miss Irwin in a professional role.
