Law attorneys for two railroads told Governor De Neen of Illinois the railroads will fight the proposed cent fare measure. They argued the plan could harm operations and violate existing agreements, signaling a legal contest if the measure advances.

Burlington Iowa May 23 The screens hiding interiors of local saloons were removed today in compliance with a court order to observe the mulci law in part. The decree was generally obeyed.
Leavenworth Kansas May 23 R Anthony republican editor of the Leavenworth Times will be elected congressman from the first Kansas district to succeed Charles Curis United States senator Anthony is unopposed in the race from Leavenworth Times.

General Streeter for the defense presented the trust deed appointing three trustees to manage Mrs Mary Baker Eddy's property. Columbus Ohio May 23 The Presbyterian general assembly opened with a presentation of the report on marriage and divorce and related sources. The session began with discussion of doctrinal and social implications.
In Lexington Kentucky on May 23 1904 Judge James Hargis was found not guilty of the murder of Thomas Cockrill. Testimony included alleged conspiracy claims involving Hargis his brothers and Sheriff Ed Callahan. Curt Jett testified against Hargis while others died by shooting. Next trial date May 27 at Sandy Hook.
In New York on May 22 Oscar S Straus outlined remedies for economic troubles at the National Association of Manufacturers banquet. The group urged tariff revision and more reciprocity treaties while backing measures against illegal combinations and a $1.5 million education campaign.
In Pasadena on May 23 the funeral for Hon. Edwin Hurd Conger was held at 3 p.m. at his home 105 South El Molino Avenue. Mason City Illinois May 23 Special The jury found J D Barlow of Thornton not guilty on the first ballot in the fraudulent banking case indicted last September. Barlow was a banker at Thornton.
In Cincinnati on May 23 whisky advanced two cents a gallon to a selling price of 1.84 dollars per gallon. The rise marks a clear uptick in local spirits costs.

Elections continue across Austria with second ballots cast today except in Galicia and Dalmatia. The vote follows the new equal and universal suffrage law that began last week.
