He hails from Chicago and worked in West Liberty prior to Muscatine. Myra teaches girls PE. Ed plays trumpet drums and French horn. Beth flute singer painter. Mary Lyon studies piano.

Arraignment Set Thursday For Man Charged in Murder

An arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p m Thursday in the Seventh District Court for Jesus Camerena Macias 55 bound over to district court in the stabbing death of 22 year old Hermineo Mesias at the Blue Note Cocktail Lounge Muscatine The bond is 50000 and Macias is jailed The preliminary hearing featured Inspector Clifford Bennett Dr V W Swayze and Frank Gomez owner of the Blue Note.

Youth Struck by Car. Change Stolen in City

Muscatine patrolman reports a youth named Don Payne was struck by a car while bicycling near McCormick's IGA at 818 E 8th street. Driver Pat Furst of Durant provided aid at Muscatine General Hospital. About $10 was taken from a change machine at Westinghouse laundromat No 1 at 616 Mulberry Ave. A vandalism report notes a window broken in the Wareco System of Iowa service station at 8th and Cypress streets.

Youths shorts stance costs student grade in criminology

YOWACITY John Pelton president of the University of Iowa student body says professor Robert G Caldiell kicked him out of criminology for wearing bermuda shorts in class as a protest against a ban. Pelton, a Clinton senior, wore the shorts for two weeks and was told no grade would be given. The professor says Pelton did not complete an introductory course prerequisite. In other news a grant of 750241 to Iowa City to aid a local park and recreation program was announced by the Housing and Urban Development Department.

At the Port City Coin Club meeting held at the YWCA Wilbur Balmos was elected president for the year starting July 1 Ray Abney became vice president Esther Naber and H E Schroeder were re elected as secretary and treasurer Don Fennell Wes Othmer and Warren Allen were named to audit the past year records The club approved a subscription to three numismatic magazines for the Veterans Hospital at Iowa City and donated numismatic books from last fall About 50 members and guests attended and prizes were awarded to Paul Kissell Al Schmitt James Burroughs Don Fennell Gary Kissell Harry Fryberger Earle Cook William Moore and William Baizer

Sertoma Club Plans Charter Date For Muscatine Chapter

A Muscatine Sertoma club group held a noon membership meeting for current and prospective members at Dog N Suds 1505 Park Ave. Temporary officers are president Tom Dahms treasurer Lonnie Sulzberger and membership chairman Dr Don Fick. Charter date set for Friday. A social free steak dinner at George's Steak House 217 W 2nd St sponsored by Dubuque and Davenport chapters was announced in a newsletter.

Savings Bond Sales Reach 46 Percent In Muscatine County

Richard A. Shultz, Muscatine volunteer county bonds chairman, reports May sales of Series E and H United States savings bonds and freedom shares totaled $114,717. Five month county total is $509,143, equal to 46 percent of its 1967 goal, with Decatur leading Iowa at 65 percent and Lyon at 63 percent. Louisa shows 29 percent with $144,841, Cedar 38 percent at $304,014, and Scott at 39 percent with $1,902,579.

Rep Schwengel Here on July 7

First District Congressman Fred Schwengel, Republican, will visit Muscatine Friday July 7 to meet county constituents. The agenda includes a 7:30 a.m. breakfast with GOP officials and civic leaders at the Elks Club, a press conference, and meetings from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Appointment lines are 263 7970 and 263 6252. Similar meetings are planned in each county during Congress' Independence Day recess.

Thurman Named Manager at Monsanto Luling Plant

W. R. Robirds, Muscatine plant manager, was named manager of Monsanto's Luling Louisiana facility. Charles H. Thurman, Muscatine manufacturing superintendent, will replace Robirds. Gene Barham will take Thurman's Muscatine post. Barham, Thurman, and Robirds are long time Monsanto staff with ties to Arkansas and Louisiana plants.

Muscatine Community College Opens Thursday Evening

Muscatine Community College will be open Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. for registration and conferences about courses. The office hours are 8 to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Students who work during the day may attend the evening session and should arrange a conference ahead of time for fall enrollment.

Legion Post Nominates Officers for 1967 68

The Muscatine American Legion opens officer nominations for 1967 68 at Thursday’s meeting. A second nomination on July 12 and a third on July 20 precede the July 27 election. Plans outline the 49th annual convention July 31 and Aug 1 at Davenport with Blackhawk hotel as headquarters. Thirteen delegates and thirteen alternates to the state convention will be chosen at the same meeting.

Muscatine Post Office to Close for July 4 Holiday

Acting Postmaster Walter I Conway announced July 4 will be a holiday at the Muscatine post office. The lobby and sub-stations will be closed with only one daily mail reception at 6:20 a.m. and dispatch at 6:05 p.m. Boxholders may use holiday hours. special delivery and perishable mail will be delivered in the city. Substitute clerks will handle incoming and outgoing mail.

Mrs Schmidt Earns M A at University of Iowa

Mrs Ormia Parker Schmidt of Route 2 received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa as part of the June commencement in which over 2,000 degrees were awarded. She serves as the librarian at Muscatine Community College.
