Migrant Headstart Center to Open in Muscatine

Muscatine ready to open a Headstart center and elementary school for migrant children at Franklin School on July 3 funded by federal grants and local OEO support. Seven teachers will run an ungraded program with trips to Amana Quad-Cities and other sites to boost reading math and language skills amid ongoing nationwide migrant education challenges.

College District Board Sets 2 540 027 Budget

Eastern Iowa Community College District board tentatively approves a 1947 68 budget of 2 540 027 for Davenport Clinton and Muscatine campuses. General fund 1 808 866 up 306 905 funds for auto tech electronics air conditioning and new staff proposed. Final action July 8 with possible September amendment due to state aid and legislation.

Teen Republicans Invite Muscatine Teens to Meeting

Muscatine Scott County Education Budget Stated

The Muscatine Scott County Board of Education considered a proposed 1967 68 budget of 1 024 487 with final action expected in August. The plan extends to a full year due to state guidance. Salary increases for secretaries and clerks totaling 5600 were approved and administrative costs totaled 64800 with salaries 36500. Purchase of two portable classrooms for educable handicapped is under consideration.

Record Mississippi River towboat traffic at Rock Island

Record upstream traffic reported on the Mississippi River at Dam 15 Rock Island with 47 towboats moving riverward. Northbound movements carried 251000 tons in 172 barges, including coal petroleum products and miscellaneous items, while downstream traffic moved 161 barges totaling 100200 tons. Total weekly cargo reached 351200 tons. Dam 16 gates opened for the 9 foot channel while Dam 17 gates remained out of water.

W Nyweide New President of Rotary Club

Wallace Nyweide was elected Rotary club president at Monday noon meeting receiving the gavel from past-president John Wessels. Wessels got the past-presidents pin as Nyweide announced new committees and future project plans. Five Rotarians earned perfect attendance: Lindley Hoopes, Paul Fischer, Paul Schweitzer, Herb Leu, and Forrest Larmer. Robert Jehring showed a Buick Open golf tournament color film as the day’s program.

Line Painters Work Third Shift In City Streets

Muscatine street department crews repaint parking stalls pedestrian walkways and surface markings after recent improvements. Work runs nightly 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., weather permitting, with barricades at each end of the sections. Cars parked in blocked areas may be towed by city police.

Muscatine Residents Elected to State Historical Society

Four Muscatine county residents were elected to membership in the State Historical Society of Iowa in June, according to Superintendent William J. Petersen. New members include Ruth Atkinson Albee, Nancy Jewett, Mrs. Elmer L. Chatfield of Muscatine, and Eugene A. Meisinger of Wilton.

Muscatine Woman Survives Suicide Attempt by Overdose

A Muscatine woman was hospitalized after swallowing sleeping pills in an apparent suicide attempt. Her daughter found a note and police assisted in forcing entry to the apartment. She was transported in a semi conscious state and treated at Muscatine General Hospital, with stomach pumped and later reported in good condition.
