London reports say Italian forces regained Cape Sile and territory between Zenson and Fossetta Canal, pushing Austrians to the Fossetta and Sile canals. Descriptions note heavy fighting along the Piave, with Italian air support and a notable Austro-Hungarian retreat.
Secretary of Agriculture Houston told the Iowa Bankers Association in Dubuque on June 20 that American food stocks have grown due to farmers efforts. Cossacks aged 15 to 50 are in the crusade against newcomers amid ongoing clashes. A Don Cossack delegation in Kiely negotiates with Germans and Ukrainians to prevent treaties affecting the Don government. A German commission at Novocherkask agrees not to advance into Don territory and will pay cash for food and forage.
At Cucusa Aircraft and Motor Corp main plant a 200 worker strike began at 10 o clock. Union leaders report two hundred men laid down tools. Machinists at other plants will be called out at noon after a meeting between James TE Kepperiey and a workers committee.
Washington June 20 A new type of unsinkable ship is being built in Amarien contracts for ten vessels have been let by the French government to an American yard. The design is by a Frenchman and keeps secret its untried buoyancy features. Since a buoyancy box test on the Laid a steamer the board has not pushed new anti torpedo measures and bulkheads are being increased in vessels. An American passenger steamship off the South Carolina coast reported sighting a German submarine last Saturday. The steamer escaped by speed and wireless calls, causing the submerged raider to break off pursuit. A second report notes an American steamer 180 to 200 miles south of Sandy Hook was chased by a U-boat at 4 p.m. yesterday.
Washington report states President Wilson ordered all U S stockyards placed under federal license. A presidential proclamation requires licenses from the food administration by July 25, and licensing extends to commission men, order buyers, speculators, and dealers in such stockyards except exemptions under the food and fuel law.
General Maria Louis Adolph Guillaumat is transferred from the Balkan theater to command the French army and serve as military governor of Paris. He succeeds General A. Y. Duball, named grand chancellor of the Legion of Honor, in succession to General Georges Worentin.
