Prohibition Costs and Effects Debated in Vote Appeal
A June 20 vote is urged to keep an amendment while wet propaganda argues enforcement costs are large. Official figures show enforcement from 1920 1931 cost 284 million, fines and taxes 548 million, leaving a 264 million balance. Prohibition era employment was low, with 86 000 drink producers in 1914. Economic figures show wealth rising from 192 billion in 1914 to 329 billion in 1931. Will Rogers comments on prosperity. The main goal of the 18th Amendment is to reduce booze consumption, with drinking level claims contested by proponents.
