Large turnout as January and June divisions of the Muscatine high school hold class day exercises in the auditorium. Miss Gail Hamilton and Miss Edith Leahy deliver salutatory and valedictory, with Miss Grit Heezen honored for top scholarship.
A salutatory by Gail Hamilton opens with reflections on four busy years of study and the classmates’ hopes for growth. The piece contemplates past events, future changes, and the role of a critic’s pen in guiding improvement as the class nears a new era.
The critic’s duty is to ferret out faults with kindness and aim at improvement. The province of the critic is not to condemn but to guide, revealing faults and failures to aid betterment and instructive correction.
A satire of class portraits presents students evaluating their president Clark Barnard and others, mixing praise and humorous faults. The piece ends with a formal farewell to teachers, the class expressing gratitude and looking toward future life, with poems and speeches framing the graduation mindset.
A fragment from a January division address reflects on leaving school for entering a new field of labor. The speaker notes a four year association forming a strong chain, aiming toward a destined path and useful future work. The text mentions Clark Barnard and references preparation for adulthood and civic duty.
