Air conditioning irrigation boosts potato yields at Muscatine Island
Iowa State University researchers on the Muscatine Island Field Station report a three year study showing air conditioning irrigation raises yields and total solids in four potato varieties Norland Norgold Viking and Kennebec. Kennebec shows the largest gains with average yield up 38 percent and total solids up 1.2 percent. The method uses a low rate mist to cool the plant canopy when temperatures exceed 85 degrees enabling roots to take up water, though costly to install.
