Major league draft opens with talent hunt across teams
Major league baseball teams begin the draft seeking young talent after selecting 563 prospects. Washington, first in the free agent draft after a last place 1968 finish, may sign Jeff Burroughs, an 18 year old slugger from Long Beach, with price rumors up to 200000 dollars. Burroughs impressed Williams with five homers in a workout at Anaheim Stadium. Williams praised his power while noting average speed and arm are not outstanding. Burroughs, who hit .569 last season for Woodrow Wilson High, graduates later this month and will be eligible to sign. Ted Williams expressed enthusiasm about the workout. Houston, picking second, selected James Richard, a 6-7 pitcher from Ruston, who may attend Southern University. Richard starred in both baseball and basketball in high school. Chicago White Sox chose Ted Nicholson, a 6-5 third baseman from Laurel, Mississippi, and the New York Mets picked Randy Sterling, a pitcher from Key West, Florida.
