Ruth Nichols halves westward air record in stormy flight
Ruth Nichols of Rye New York trimmed nearly nine hours from the westward transcontinental flight record by flying from New York to Burbank California in 16 hours 59 minutes. Weather was poor and snow and rain forced her to skim tree tops west of Amarillo Texas. She may attempt a return flight in two days stopping for fuel at Wichita Kansas and may add a larger fuel tank. The previous westbound record was 25 hours 44 minutes set by Mrs J M Keith Miller. Her eastward mark stands at 21 hours 47 minutes and Nichols plans a new effort to beat it.
