President recovery chief Hugh S Johnson launches the National Recovery Administration campaign to urge businesses to display the blue eagle seal. He cites 70 to 80 percent employer participation and warns against boycotts while stressing unity to cure a common evil.
H B Carter 44 of Davenport is jailed as officers search for three others in an attempted robbery at the Fairport post office and Mrs Carrie Hershey's general store. A gun battle left the crew in brush, loot abandoned, and shots fired narrowly missing Sheriff Nesper and another officer.
Nine men were seriously burned and ten more slightly hurt in a Whiting Indiana Standard Oil gas explosion. About fifty workers were injured as gas odor prompted warning by L C Wheeler assistant superintendent. Serious injuries were sent to St Catherine s hospital and others treated at the company first aid station. The blast struck an unused refinery unit and an official inquiry began.
Prophetstown reports Mrs. Donald Oppendike, 25, diagnosed with sleeping sickness. Quarantine antine placed at her home by Dr. Isaac Vandermyde of Prophetstown and Dr. U. S. Lewis, state health commissioner.
Raymond Moley, a close adviser to President Roosevelt and a storm center in the administration, will edit a new national weekly published by Vincent Astor. The Columbia professor announced his retirement after a heart to heart talk with the president’s confidant. Roosevelt remains friendly to Moley and Hull, with no break in the president’s friendship toward Moley.
Athens court fixed Tuesday morning for hearing the application for formal sanction in the arrest of Samuel Insull in connection with American extradition proceedings. The return of the former Chicago utilities operator is sought as part of the financial collapse of his interests. Deputy Pericles Rhalli aided in the defense. Insull, in a nursing home, complained secrecy handicapped the case. Athens authorities removed some papers from Insull's apartments in a routine act.
Mrs. W. S. Tanney wife of a Columbus Junction photographer died at her home after a brief illness. Born Rowena in West Liberty she lived there before moving to Columbus Junction four years ago. Survived by husband mother Mary Franklin of West Liberty two brothers Fred Franklin Salem Oregon Oscar Franklin Des Moines and two sisters Mrs. Ray Ingraham West Liberty and Mrs. J G Henderson Manchester Iowa. Body to be taken to West Liberty for burial with funeral arrangements incomplete.
NRA volunteers recruited over the weekend began a campaign at 9 a m to obtain signed pledge cards from Muscatine homeowners supporting the NRA program. Herman Lord coordinates county efforts as part of a national drive with 1 500 000 volunteers to plant the blue eagle in homes and businesses.
Mrs Mary Millage 81 of Moscow died at Hershey hospital Muscatine at 6 40 p m Sunday after fractures of the right hip. Shock caused death. Born Sept 13 1851 in Illinois she was a daughter of George and Eliza Richardson. Survived by three children Mrs Dan Smith Riley Millage and Fred Millage. Funeral at Moscow church 2 pm Wednesday. Body to Meyers Funeral home thence to Moscow home this afternoon.
Muscatine County 4 H entrants clinched blue ribbons at the Des Moines state fair in home furnishing and Baby Beef divisions. Winners include Leonard Gleaves and Richard Jenkins in the Herefords and Cleo Yoder in Aberdeen Angus with top placements. The county group ranked eighth overall, with Louisa seventh, while individuals from West Liberty Stockton Wellman and Sambo earned notable finishes.
Proponents push for repeal ahead of Washington statewide vote while Texas becomes the 23rd state to approve repeal. Dallas reports Texas also legalizes 3.2 beer with voters backing repeal by about 114 485 and beer liberalization by 128 306.

Duke and Young received suspended 30 day jail terms for intoxication, while Tobias paid a $5 fine and costs. Nyweide and Danz were fined $1 and costs each for speeding.
Four volunteer firemen lost their lives when a blast at a What Cheer Iowa grocery store hurled them through the roof of a two story brick building. The explosion also injured an 80 year old meat market operator and damaged a neighboring building and equipment. State Fire Marshal John Strohm arrived to investigate as nearby towns aided in controlling the fire. Loss is estimated around $15,000 with insurance coverage partial.
