Garth Guthrie, a Canadian war veteran, returns scarred and estranged from Edith Falconer. Brother Sir Charles Guthrie, a wealthy profiteer, confronts him as Garth's circle includes Etienne Savanne and geologist Doctor Quarrier with his nurse sister Joan. Their schooner drifts ashore and Quarrier reports a robbery by Laughing Meponaid. In Elkwan, Ninda, a tuberculosis patient and war nurse, dies after aiding Garth who befriends Crees medicine man Sen Souel. Charles rebukes Garth.
