Rocky Mountain Packing plant destroyed by fire

A Saturday morning blaze destroyed the Rocky Mountain Packing Corporation plant at Forty-eighth South and First West streets. The fire gutted the factory and canned goods valued at over two hundred thousand dollars, aided by exploding cans as Murray City volunteers and Salt Lake County fire crews battled the flames. About 600 acres of pens valued at roughly $20 per acre, under contract, were also set to arrive, but their shipment could not be saved. the loss leaves about two hundred workers unemployed.

Mountain Packing Car Plant Destroyed by Fire

Fire destroyed the Mountain Packing Car plant with only one nearby hydrant. Water was difficult to obtain, two lines were placed in Cottonwood Creek, and engines supplied the streams. Control was achieved at 7 30. Loss confined to the plant and one railroad car, with surrounding small buildings spared. Manager Miller says most losses are insured. Other factories will handle local crops while rebuilding, and Mayor Lester organized aid for firefighters. Skeleton of the wall and framework remained after the blaze.
