A long list of relatives and friends from Chicago Evansville St. Louis Memphis and other places spent Christmas and the holidays with families in Mt. Vernon and vicinity. Names include Poole Cunningham Barthel Mulvaney Clough Toney Eater Zauner Harlow Waite and others among local hosts and guests.

President Truman attacked Moscow for breaking wartime pledges and a “system of morals that are not morals” while saying some Soviet leaders seek an understanding with the United States. He recalled a similar Oregon remark praising Stalin and warned Russia’s attitude fuels global trouble from Palestine to China. Later, he installed officers at Grandview Masonic Lodge in a private ceremony.

Associated Press reports in Washington that Republican Leader Ship offered rebels a policy role in the new Congress but Senator Ball of Minnesota cautioned against liberalizing the GOP. He warned such change might alienate middle class supporters while Taft and Wherry seek to hold leadership posts amid liberal demands. Ball stressed the party must reflect its steady supporters while Joins debate over welfare state and conservatism.

Mystery in slashing of Faye's wrist continues

Roosevelt kin dispute whether actress Faye Roosevelt cut herself accidentally or deliberately. Mrs. Jean C. Young cites her daughter saying she reached for aspirin and blades, while Elliott Roosevelt says it was an accident. Faye Roosevelt spent a night under observation at a hospital and was released. The sheriff said the cutting looked deliberate and asked Elliott Roosevelt to appear for further details. Roosevelt, 38, is married to the actress, with four children from previous marriages. they live near Hyde Park.

Society notes announce the engagement of Evelyn Parker daughter of Mr and Mrs F H Parker of Bruford to R K E Davis son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Davis of Casey NL. The couple plan a late summer wedding. Parker is a 1942 Webber Township HS and 1946 Southern Illinois University graduate and a Mt Vernon Township HS physical education teacher. Davis is a Casey HS graduate who attended UI and KU, now runs Davis Cafe in Casey.

Egyptians in Negev Cut Off

Israeli blows appear to have cut the Egyptians coastal corridor to Gaza or placed it under gunsights making reinforcement unlikely. An Israeli spokesman said the battle in southern Palestine was slickening as Gaza town, a major Egyptian garrison 20 miles north of the frontier, was cut off or left in peril from field artillery and naval batteries.

50th Anniversary of Edih and James Tennyson

Mr and Mrs James Tennyson celebrate 50 years of marriage. They wed January 5 1899 at the bride’s Dahlgren home by Reverend Will Standafer. The couple, longtime Hamilton county residents, raised eight children on a farm before moving to Mt Vernon seven years ago. They will host open house 2 to 6 pm with most of their children present. one daughter Lucille Petrretti of San Diego cannot attend. They share 26 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs Tennyson turned 69 and Mr Tennyson 72 in December.

Scheller Couple Celebrates 66th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs John M Shurtz marked their 66th wedding anniversary on Christmas Eve at home in Scheller. He is 86 she 83 and in fair health. They have two children Edith Hirons and Henry Shurtz of Wiltonville, six grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Mr and Mrs Leonard Davis of this city report the birth of a nine and one half pound son to Mr and Mrs Edward Jenkins of Gainesville Fla on Christmas Day. Mr and Mrs Harl Estes welcome a son born last night at Good Samaritan Hospital. Mrs Estes is the former Lena Faye Richardson. A son was born to Mr and Mrs John Joseph McGannon of Mt Vernon at Good Samaritan Hospital this morning. Mr and Mrs Ray Joseph Taylor are the parents of a daughter born this morning at Good Samaritan Hospital. A six pound five ounce son was born to Mr and Mrs Harold Sanders of Evansville Ind at 4 18 p m Monday at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. He is named James Harvey. Mrs Sanders is the former Marilyn Copple of Dix. Mr and Mrs Edwin White are the parents of an 11 pound son born at 10 50 a m today at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. He was named Mark Kermit.

Malden widow found guilty in German court

Mrs Wilma Ybarbo of Malden Massachusetts was sentenced to 20 years after being convicted by the U S Military Government Court of three American judges for killing her American soldier husband Sgt John Ybarbo in a bedroom quarrel The court rejected self defense and ruled the act akin to manslaughter under German law or second degree murder in U S code It overruled her claim of self defense and noted she could have called for help or moved to another room The trial spanned six days and featured sensational testimony about illicit affairs and domestic strife
