Local families and relatives crowded Mt. Vernon area during Christmas with travels from Chicago St. Louis Evansville and Indianapolis. Residents welcomed guests from Quincy Greenville Pittsburgh Newport News and Paris while others announced academic honors and travel plans including a Rose Bowl trip and a world voyage.
A Christmas Day family reunion at Mr and Mrs Lewis Brake's home honored Mrs J J Coats with out of town guests G E Morgan and Fred Spangler of Woodlawn. Church groups and auxiliaries announce December 28 meetings and reception hours for Presbyterian and other local clubs.
The Rebekah Lodge will hold a regular session at Odd Fellow's Hall this evening at 7 30.
Mr and Mrs J O Tate of near Hell hosted a Sunday dinner at their home to celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary. The event on a Thursday in December drew about 30 relatives who enjoyed a turkey dinner. Their children presented them with a new radio.
Jefferson Memorial hospital notes list admissions including Russell Lyons and several patients from Fairfield Albion Evansville and Chicago. Discharges include Ruth Murphy from St Louis Maxine Bumpus Bonnie Betty Glover and infant Eddie Maurice and others from Ina and Chicago.

Margaret Irene Apple 78 a lifelong Jefferson county resident was found dead in bed at her Woodlawn home this morning Born October 13 1870 she was the daughter of John L and Barbara Ellen Maktebarger She was first married to Bradford Robinson later to John Apple a minister Funeral arrangements were incomplete Surviving are three sons Brady Robinson Herbert Robinson and Adolphus Robinson two daughters Celia Sorenson and Nona Lafferty two brothers William Maltebarger and Jake Maltebarger eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren
Firefighters responded to three separate incidents on Christmas Eve and Day. Waldo Foster's residence at 702 S 24th saw a Christmas tree blaze damaging a rug. William Sinks at 324 Bell reported wallpaper around a flue fire with slight damage. Mary Dare, 306 Caborn, also had wallpaper near a flue catch fire but damage was light.
Mrs. L. W. Chapman of this city received word that her brother Herman D. Lee has died suddenly in Honeoye Falls New York. A former Mt. Vernon resident, he is survived by his wife and daughter.
Robert Welles was found dead near a farm house after reportedly leaving for a walk from his home. Neighbors helped carry him. clothing frozen to the body and mud covered him. A nearby stream is suspected. no violence found per Dr. Huffman. Welles last seen at 10:30 p m Saturday working in a downstairs study.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Payne announce the marriage of their daughter Maxine to William O McGuire son of Mr and Mrs Virgil McGuire. The double ring ceremony occurred Christmas Day at the Gospel Mission with Rev George Shelton officiating. The bride wore a gray suit with white accessories and white carnation corsage. maid of honor was her twin Arlene Payne. best man was Robert Ruddick. A reception followed at the groom’s parents home. The couple will reside at 431 South 22nd Street.
United Nations observers accuse Israel of breaking the Holy Land truce by attacking Egyptian forces in the Negev desert. Ralph Bunche says there was no provocation for the fighting. Reports reference Egyptian complaints of renewed hostilities and rising intensity in the region.

Louis Alva Stonecipher a farmer died at 7 40 p m Christmas Day at his Cravat home He was 83 years 1 month and 25 days old Born October 30 1865 in Washington county son of James and Margaret Breeze Stonecipher He married Maggie Baldridge October 13 1887 who died He survived by wife Ollie two daughters Fern Owens Walnut Hill and Neya Germann Woodlawn three brothers Sylvester Earl Centralia and Jake Irvington two sisters Eva Fouts Centralia and Julia Porter Pocatello Idaho five grandchildren and two great grandchildren Funeral services Tuesday at 2 00 p m at Gilead church Rev Carl Davis officiating burial in Gilead cemetery Body remains at the fiona home callers welcomed
Pearl E Harmon 44 was found dead at 10 15 Christmas morning at 331 S Second St. Coroner Ben Roeder ruled natural causes. Funeral at New Liberty Church near Orchardville Tuesday at 1 pm, with burial in New Liberty cemetery. Burial at Myers Chapel. Survived by father James N Harmon three brothers Earl Kelly Merl two sisters Inez West Carolyn and half sister Agnes Burkett.
In Nanking on December 27 the Communist radio listed war criminals to be punished by a people s court. At the top were Chiang Kai Shek Madame Chiang and Premier Sian Fo among the top military and political leaders. Officials say the move closes the door on peace negotiations.
An Austrian native and 69 year old janitor named Michael Harcharik was found unconscious with a bundle of 2730 dollars strapped to his ankle in Naplace near Ottawa Illinois. He died ten hours later in an Ottawa hospital from exposure. Authorities seek to learn why he carried the large sum. He worked for Libbey Owens Ford Glass Company at Naplace.
Robert Carter 62 of Mt. Vernon township died at 11 a m Sunday at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital after a two month stay. Services set for 1 30 p m Wednesday at Myers Chapel with Rev Bird Green officiating. burial in West Salem cemetery. He was born in Crawford County Illinois in 1886, son of Abraham and Kate Carter. Surviving are his brother Thomas Carter of Mt. Vernon, sister Mrs Kilda Barrett of Flat Rock and three half sisters Mrs Hester Ellis of Keenes Mrs Dollie Forth of Johnsonville and Mrs Eliza Trobridge of Mt. Vernon.
Al Whittenbrink aged 53 a retired Missouri Pacific railroad worker was killed today by an Illinois Central train in Tamaroa Illinois. A witness said he ran across the tracks in front of his Tamaroa home hoping to beat the train to ride to DuQuoin his planned destination. His wife survives.
