The cold spell kept North Dakota at seven below zero while Miami marked a winter heat wave with 83 degrees. Forecasters expect 5 to 15 above in North Dakota today as cold air spreads southeast through the central Mississippi and Ohio valleys. Subzero readings appeared in Montana Minnesota and Wisconsin with rain in the Appalachians and light snow in the Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest regions.

A 17 year old soldier, Paul Douglas Carter, bitten on his right index finger by a rattlesnake while hunting near Hattiesburg Mississippi. He amputated the finger by firing the shotgun with his left hand, an amputation completed at a clinic with no snake bite symptoms remaining. He is on leave from Brookley Air Force Base in Mobile Alabama.

Central Church of Christ adult choir hosted a Christmas party December 16 with cantata games and a gift exchange. Royal Neighbor Social Club met at Mrs Martins home for a Christmas dinner with 23 members and one visitor Mrs Agnes Phelps. Mrs Lillie Johnson conducted a business meeting after dinner. prayers were said and Christmas carols sung. Pauline Evans died Friday at her Big Rock Illinois home. A Mt. Vernon native aged 38, she left the city about 15 years ago. Funeral services are set for Sunday in Big Rock.
