Trucks Collide and Kill Driver on Highway 50

Olney Illinois December 23 Darrell Van Blaricum 32 of Clay City Illinois was killed in a head on collision between two large trucks. Van Blaricum drove an oil tank truck and a cargo of steel spilled across the road blocking U S Highway 50. Three others escaped with minor injuries.

Christmas Party At Jefferson Memorial Hospital

A Christmas party was held at Jefferson Memorial Hospital last evening for nurses, doctors, and staff. Dr. Andy Hall spoke. gifts were exchanged under a lighted tree by sixty attendees. Merle Henderson led ceremonies and Lewis Brake gave the invocation. Music came from the Central Church of Christ junior choir.

Shields Unit Home Bureau elects officers at meeting

The Shields Unit of the Home Bureau met at Orra Wilson's home with 24 members and four guests. Officers elected for the year include Lena Faye Johnson as chairwoman Amy McGinley as vice chair Mary Potter as secretary treasurer Maudie Pinkston as recreation chair and Daisy Coil as assistant recreation chair. Major lesson by Adele Eller on Recognizing Good Design in Furniture and minor by Orra Wilson. Lizzie French discussed furniture of early county settlers. A Christmas gift exchange was held and refreshments served.

Christmas Party of James Cher Sr Family in Dahlgren

A family Christmas party for the James Cher Sr family was held Saturday December 18 at the home of Mr and Mrs Eudel Tucker in Dahlgren. They plan to move to Mississippi for the winter. Guests exchanged gifts and 22 people were served refreshments.

First Methodist Choir Rehearses Tonight at 7 30

The First Methodist choir plans a rehearsal tonight at 7 30 o clock. Elks Christmas Party drew over 500 members and guests to the Elks Club for a turkey dinner and games. Franklin school teachers hosted their annual Christmas party at Miss Frances Drennan’s home, 309 North Tenth Street, with festive decor, refreshments, games, prizes, and a gift exchange.

Flora Davenport 76 died at noon yesterday at 511 S 1st Street. Funeral Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the family home with Rev. Bird Green officiating. Burial in Opdyke Cemetery. Survived by husband Louis and three sons Edward Belle Rive Cloyd Lawrence KS and Almon Evansville Ind.

Father of W. H. Beckmeyer Dies

Fred G. Beckmeyer aged 78, father of W. H. Beckmeyer and former Hoyleton Irvington grocer, died at his Centralia home. He moved to Centralia two years ago and is survived by wife Emelia and four sons Irvin, Armin, Wilfred, and Owen. Services set at St Peters Evangelical Church Centralia with graveside rites at Hoyleton cemetery.

Samuel Edwards Dies in Storm Lake Iowa

Word has been received of the death of Samuel Edwards at his home in Storm Lake Iowa occurring Tuesday He was born in Shiloh township in 1862 the son of Samuel and Susan Inglett Edwards He was a brother of the late J R Edwards who lived west of Mt Vernon and left Jefferson county about 1885.

Woman Hurt in Head On Crash Near Ina

Mrs Grace Bolen of West Frankfort sustained bruises and abrasions in a head on collision on state route 37 a half mile south of Ina at 9 30 this morning. Her car was demolished while the Webb vehicle suffered lighter damage and Webb was uninjured. Mrs Bolen was taken to West Frankfort hospital.

A dispute between Southwestern Telephone Co and 50 000 union workers across Missouri Kansas Oklahoma Arkansas and Texas was settled early today averting a strike. The new contract grants weekly wage increases from 3 to 6 dollars and an hourly raise of 1044 cents, below the union’s 15 cent target.

Child Burns Leg: $10,000 Suit Filed

A $10,000 damage suit over burns to four year old William Paul Sneed from an unprotected incinerator on a rented property at 12th and Logan streets was filed in circuit court. The plaintiffs, Clyde Sneed and William Paul Sneed, by Clyde Sneed, his father, allege the incident occurred December 23, 1947, and that the right leg was severely burned, leaving it shorter than the left. County Judge Frank H. Walker represents the plaintiff.

Seven Bands to Play 13 Hours for VFW Holiday Party

Thirteen hours of dancing with seven bands at the VFW club on Christmas Day. Dancing starts 10 a.m. Saturday and runs until 1 a.m. Sunday with Rhythm Four, Jack Alexanders Band, Slims Trio, Fenton's Orchestra, Harry Elliots Band, the Egyptianaires, and Jack Sullivan's Orchestra performing at scheduled times. Victor J. Rosenberger Dies in Peoria Hospital

Word has been received of the death of Victor J. Rosenberger aged 53 of 815 Hansscler Street Peoria Illinois. Death followed a heart ailment at a Peoria hospital Wednesday noon. He is survived by wife Victoria Hagle of Waltonville father Eugene Rosenberger of Woodlawn stepmother and three sisters Loretta Wall Anna Swodolski Mabel Piper a brother Roy Centralia and half sister Ruth. He was preceded by his mother and a sister Lena Simmons. Funeral arrangements set for Monday in Peoria.
