James E. Bruce Dies at Age 73

James Edward Bruce of 326 Bell Street died at 9 25 this morning at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital at age 73 years four months and 26 days. He was a mining engineer for Beckemeyer Coal born July 19 1875 in Streator Illinois son of John and Elnora Bruce. Survived by wife Ella Woodland six sons and three daughters and other relatives. Funeral arrangements incomplete with body at Myers Chapel for visitation after 10 am Thursday.

Truman to Get Petrillo Record

President Truman will receive a special Christmas record to mark the end of the Petrillo recording ban. A "Million dollar" cast of opera and popular singers performs "I'm Just Wild About Harry" conducted by James C. Petrillo after the AFL Musicians union and record companies signed a new five year agreement ending an 11 month recording halt.

Women at Register-News Enjoy Turkey Dinner and Gift Exchange

The Register-News women employees were treated to a turkey dinner at Robbs Coffee Shop, then visited Mrs. C. J. Thompson’s home at 500 South 20th Street. Prizes were awarded, a Christmas gift exchange held, and refreshments served by the hostess. The Wesleyan Service Guild met at Robbs Coffee Shop for a 7:30 dinner followed by devotional services, a program by Vivian Ross, carols, and a brief business session.

The Dorothy Gates Circle of the First Baptist Church met at Mrs. Everett Gibson's Salem Road home yesterday at two o'clock. Fifteen members attended with Mrs. Mary Chuster giving the devotional and presenting a film titled The Christmas Story. Bandages were rolled for the White Cross.

Federated Club Christmas Party in Mt Vernon

The Mt Vernon Federated Women's Club held a Christmas party at Robbs Coffee Shop. Mrs Virgil Howell read the club prayer as a mixed high school octet sang carols and a Time film was shown. Rev Andrew Carraker spoke on the larger implications of Christmas stressing peace and brotherhood. Toys were donated to the Goodfellow Club and a Disabled Veteran's display was shown. Prince Charles Christened In Royal Ceremony

London December 15 Prince Charles Philip Arthur George of Edinburgh was christened today with an official description noting he behaved well. The infant, son of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is second in line to the throne after King George VI. Margaret handed him to the Archbishop of Canterbury who named the child Charles Philip Arthur George of Edinburgh.

Illinois Bell seeks temporary hike during permanent rate case

CHICAGO December 15 The Illinois Bell Telephone Company said it will request a temporary rate increase while hearings for a permanent rise proceed. The ICC opened the third week of hearings on a permanent increase averaging 16 percent for 323 Illinois communities. Company counsel Leslie N Jones said plans include asking later this week for a date to hear arguments on the temporary increase, with a likely motion next week at Springfield.

Funeral Friday for Mrs Guthrie

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Annis Guthrie will be held Friday at 2 00 PM at Myers Chapel officiated by Rev Lepton Har poole with burial in Oakwood cemetery. The body remains at Myers after 10 AM Thursday. Mrs Guthrie, wife of Frank C Guthrie, died yesterday morning at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital.
