State Champion Horse Pulling Defeated by George Abbott Team

A. D. Vanderbeck's state champion pulling team fell to George Abbott of Elwell as his owned and driven team pulled 22 900 pounds. Vanderbeck's team, from Forest Hill, started but failed to reach the distance in three tries, ending within 9 inches. Gorham Brothers team driven by Myron Davis finished third with 2 800 pounds. A new lighter-class winner, L. Thren’s team pulled 2 450 pounds 18 feet 5 inches, eclipsing E. Foote’s 2 400 pounds 27 feet to take second, with Fred Campbell’s 2 400 pounds 25 feet 6 inches in third.

Training School Set to Open Monday September 18

The Training School will open Monday September 18 the week before the Normal opening. Enrollment is open in remaining grades including kindergarten first seventh eighth and ninth. Coal Miners Stick Says Local Man

A Pennsylvania coal mining region suffers from a prolonged strike with few leaving the country. BEF Collins says miners out of work are holding on after a three week trip to DuBois Oil City and nearby towns. He notes Saturday store crowds in the strike area but overall dull business. Inspection of County Roads Begins Tour of System Check

County officials launched the annual inspection tour to assess road conditions and future needs. The party will cover every mile of the county road system through the week, including the road commission, board committees, clerk Perry Thompson, clerk Bert W. Shangle, and engineer Merle Johnson. Progress includes 17 more miles of gravel in Isabella county and the erection of numerous direction and mileage signs hand lettered by A. W. Keith of Mt. Pleasant.

Bean blight shows little damage in Isabella County

The bean blight is not worse than in typical years in Isabella County say local elevator men. William Francis of the Isabella County Farmer's Grain Co notes the blight does not harm the crop more than in other years. Well Contract Signed for Mt. Pleasant Water Plant

Officials of Harmon Ness of Indianapolis signed a contract to install a new water well in Mt. Pleasant at a cost of $11,500. Well-digging equipment arrived and work began the following day. Details appeared in last week's Times.

Ernest Cameron Nominated for State Superintendent at Detroit Convention

Local supporters in Isabella County back Ernest Cameron formerly of Mt. Pleasant for the state superintendent of public instruction. Cameron is secretary treasurer of the State Teachers Association with offices in Lansing. Born in Sherman City he began teaching in Isabella rural schools and served as county school commissioner. His retirement fund work is cited as gaining teachers’ solid backing statewide.

Additions near completion at court house

The courthouse additions begun last May are expected to finish around September 7. Plastering started Wednesday and fireproof vaults will be installed once they arrive. Contractor A D MacRae reports 6 to 8 men have worked on the project since May.

Auto wreck claims life of two year old boy

An accident near Mt. Pleasant left Junior Torpey dead after the car driven by Mrs. J A Torpey Jr flipped into a ditch. Four year old Eileen sustained serious facial injuries. other occupants escaped serious harm as the mother and relatives were shaken by the crash.

Fair Week Racers Set for Saginaw 100 Lap Race

At Saginaw on Labor Day Sam and Elvin Ross of Isabella county will race in the fourth annual 100 lap event. Sam Ross, 1925 state champion, defends his title with a new car. Trials begin at noon, final start at 3 p m with over a dozen trial entrants and seven starters for the final. Records likely to fall after recent fast times.

Mt Pleasant man John Snelenberger dies after brief illness

John B. Snelenberger aged 67 of Mt Pleasant died at his East Broadway home Friday night after a illness of less than a week. He had been district manager for the Lansing State Journal in Clare Isabella and northern Gratiot counties during seven years in Mt Pleasant. Born in 1869 on a farm in Paulding County Ohio he previously resided in Angola Indiana and was a traveling representative for the Duluth Herald.

High School Enrollment Expected to Surpass Last Year

Enrollment may exceed 900 as the city schools begin their first semester on Tuesday September 7. The high school will use a revised schedule to handle many country and village students. All students above eighth grade from Winn will transfer to the local high school and inquiries keep Supt. George E. Gannard optimistic about a large enrollment.

Local Doctor Loses Coat With Drugs

Dr C D Pullen reports his coat stolen from his car in front of his office on Friday evening. He suspects a drug addict targeted the coat for morphine doses and notes items like his state issued driver's license a hypo dermic with morphine and his pocket clinical record were inside. He says the thief can keep the coat but hopes the containing items are returned.

New Enamel Factory to Open in Mt Pleasant on Labor Day

A. J. Smith of the American Enameled Products Co announces a public inspection day at the new Mt. Pleasant plant on Labor Day. Machines and equipment are being moved from Chicago and trained workers will arrive next week for on site demonstrations and operator training.

Isabella fair draws large crowds to exhibits

Throbs of fair week filled the industrial building as crowds toured booths prepped by local merchants. Gover's Wholesale Supply Co displayed school supplies and athletic goods while Ray Austin showcased electric motors, washers, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners.

Deflation of Prices Hits Dakota Farmers

Harry G. Gover reports widespread price declines in the Dakota territory causing economic gloom. His party including Mr and Mrs Gover Ruth Gover and Mr and Mrs C S Bentley traveled west starting August 11 after Harold Bentley wed Ethyl Moody. They visited Devil's Lake and the Dells in Wisconsin before reaching Mt Pleasant on the return trip.

Mt Pleasant to Host North Michigan School Chiefs Conference

The Northwest Michigan Round Table will hold a two day meeting in Mt. Pleasant on Friday and Saturday September 17 18. Jail Used as Hospital for Accident Victim Joe Coleman

Joe Coleman, seriously injured when his car left the Chippewa near the Red Bridge, lay in Isabella county jail two days before friends moved him to his Deerfield township home Monday night. He had been transported from a local doctor’s office after the county hospital was overfull.

County Teachers Fall Round-Up Set for September 11 at Mt Pleasant

The County Teachers fall round up will be held at Mt. Pleasant High School at 10 a.m. EST on September 11, 1926. The meeting will review the new child accounting system with supplied forms. Union Club Meeting Set for September At Gover Home

On Thursday September 9 Union club members will meet at the N. D. Gover home. A pot luck dinner will be served promptly at noon followed by a welcome address by Mr. Gover and music. The afternoon will feature games and stunts led by Prof. M. A. Cobb.

Auto displays draw crowds at county fair

Crowds flocked to the county fair auto displays featuring 126 and 1927 models in three tents. J F Battle Motor Sales housed Buick cars while Chevrolet and Ford lines occupied separate tents with open and closed models and a Ford pavilion. A notable exhibit showed every Michigan license plate from 1908 to 1926.
