The committee will study the costs of fluoridating the city water supply and whether it can fit the 1965 66 budget. The speaker notes Kentucky law requiring fluoridation for cities over 20 000 and cites nine cents per resident yearly cost. Resistance has existed since the proposal's origins including references to fire and automobiles.
Edwin A. Walker former U S Army General will speak tonight at the Mount Dora Community Building. The event sponsored by the Americanism Educational Council requires a $1 donation and is open to the public. Walker known for anti leftist views and states rights stands discussed his wartime service and postwar roles.
The Illusions will play for a CAP sponsored dance Friday night at the Hurri cane Hut in Mount Dora. The event starts at 7 30 p.m. as part of an extended CAP public relations drive. The series will culminate with a Group 20 CAP Ball on December 4 celebrating the Civil Air Patrol’s 24th year.
Medical Associates of Atlanta will request a building permit this week to construct a 100 plus bed nursing home on a 20 acre tract at Eudora Road near Golden Triangle Shopping Center. The project costs about 750000 with local builders to be used and completion expected in six to seven months for 24 hour care and some welfare patients.
City Councilman Robert Wason notes kitchen repairs are nearing finish and the social room meetings can resume Monday. The Community Building facility should be ready for use again next week pending no unexpected delays.
The Mount Dora fire department says a house fire and a grass fire occurred in the past month with no damage recorded. City firefighters also inspected the three local schools before the new school year opened.
Hurricanes prepare for Friday trip to Tavares after a costly win over St. Cloud. Key injuries include senior center Jackie Pease with a shoulder fracture and quarterback/collarbone injury to Charles Clement. Clement may miss about four weeks.
In Mount Dora the absence of golf spurred citizens to form the Mount Dora Golf Assn Inc. The city leased a 99 year tract on Highway 441, funded occasional maintenance, and supported the venture with grants. Roy Christopher led legal work. William Wadsworth funded a clubhouse and lockers. By December 1946 the golf club opened as a major outdoor activity with 80 acres, later expanding to ninths holes and a full club with pro Jameson, weekly tournaments, Ladies Day, and ongoing social events.
Mount Dora plans a December 14 referendum on annexing old and new Sylvan Shores and the North Lake Gertrude area, with council set to vote on a second reading October 5 and final passage October 19. Fire protection outside the city will be suspended except for the annexation areas, while mutual aid with Eustis and Zellwood continues.
City Council discussed removing overhanging lines in the downtown area with Councilman Tom Champion coordinating the renovation. Florida Telephone Corp. district manager Carlton Johnston attended and pledged cooperation. Meanwhile east of Donnelly Street city crews install planters with water outlets and brick features.
Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce directors approved five slide presentation sets totaling a 15 minute slide and audio show. The program will be used across regions to boost tourism and attract new residents. Changes to the chamber brochure were approved ahead of the next print run and winter advertising plans were outlined.
