Cut Fuelwood Now For Winter Supply

County Agent R. E. Norris notes a cord of oak hickory longleaf or slash pine equals a ton of coal or 200 gallons of fuel oil in heating value. With coal and fuel oil hard to obtain this winter, farmers should increase their firewood supply and explore selling wood to markets. Tips include cut split and stack green wood now, trim to market sizes, favor hardwoods high in heat value, remove defective or no market trees, avoid selling fat pine, and utilize top wood and turpentine butts. rail and transport demands may curb fuel needs for the war effort.
