Local Searchlight Battalion To Award Good Conduct Medals

The Local Searchlight Battalion will award Good Conduct Medals to forty or more members during a regular Saturday evening band concert under Manuel Sedano. Captain Ernest Henderson will lead 125 to 150 soldiers and three officers from Donnelly Park to the band stand for presentations at 8 15 after two musical numbers. The event includes a cornet duet reprise, sousaphone solo Asleep in the Deep, and a cornet Elsie Polka, with the battalion glee club performing.

Fourth Battalion Encampment at Camp McCrory

The Fourth Battalion Florida State Guard led by Lt. Col. David L. Wiley will hold a three day encampment at Camp McCrory with 5-7 members. The unit includes Detachment HQ under Capt. Lovell and Capt. Williamson with staff sergeants. Training covers lectures and Army drills, plus a full ration menu planned by Lt. Williamson. Co B, led by Capt. Jefferis, has risen to the upper half of state training and attendance.

John W. Jepson of Tangerine Dies After Long Illness

John W. Jepson 63 longtime Tangerine Florida resident died at Lake County Medical Center Eustis Sunday after a long illness. Born December 21 1879 in Banks Alabama he earned B S and M S from Alabama Polytechnic Institute Auburn in 1900 and 1901 both in electrical and mechanical engineering. He held 49 patents including railroad car lighting and automotive systems and led several companies before retiring as engineer in charge of Foreign Division for Electric Bond and Share Company. He moved to Tangerine with his family in 1924 served nine years as postmaster and held posts on the School Board Citrus Culture Corporation Mount Dora Growers Cooperative and Orange County Chamber of Commerce.

Band School Closes Study Period Friday

The Band School ends its second week of study on Friday September 3. About thirty students have benefited with noticeable improvement in Saturday night concerts. The daily routine includes scales, exercises, band rehearsals, and extensive swimming pool time, with rest periods and lunch. Parents will attend a picnic supper Friday evening to view progress, with Mrs. Grady Simpson and mothers acting as chaperones.
