Mount Dora reports its water comes from a deep well with a centrifugal pump and light chlorine safeguards. The State Board of Health dated August 19, 1937 found sample 3131 total bacterial count 240 and sample 3132 190 with zero fermentation and no colonies, deeming the water quality good.
Florida Exhibits displays ceramics and tiles made from Florida kaolin including insulators and other products highlighting local mineral resources.
The Mount P T A announces a Halloween carnival on Monday November 1 downtown on Donnelly Street between Fifth and Third Avenues. Chairs include Mrs J M McCown parade Mrs W A Vincent decorations Mrs A Lee French and many others with activities such as games bingo grab bag and fish pond. Participants meet at the Community Building at 6 30 p m and prizes awarded for best costumes.
Miss Jean Smith a Stetson University student has been elected president of Holmes Hall for Girls. The dormitory previously housed the president and was converted to dormitory use to accommodate the growing enrollment.
Alfred Rehbaum Jr of Mount Dora, a Stetson University junior in DeLand, was pledged to Delta Mu Chapter of Sigma Nu. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Rehbaum of Mount Dora.
One of Mount Dora's most attractive homes is being erected by C. R. Young on the hillside facing South Clayton Street. The red brick structure features a basement, large front veranda, extensive storage, cedar lined upstairs bedrooms, and two baths on the second floor. Miller Construction Co. handles the project with J. F. Matthews supervising, amid orange groves and views of Lakes Dora and Beauclaire plus nearby landmarks.
Mr. Chester C. Ames of J. J. West Realty Company was seriously injured Monday afternoon in DeLand while en route from a Illinois summer to here. He suffered six fractured ribs and a facial cut. doctors at DeLand Memorial Hospital say his condition is painful but not life threatening. The accident occurred when a bee flew into his car and he swerved to avoid it.
Florida Kiwanis convention reports from St Augustine featured delegates from Mount Dora including C J Brown and Dr Gerald Richardson with officers elected for 1938 led by President C J Brown. Stebbins of Eustis spoke on the occasion as All Florida Day was observed with luncheon and Florida songs.
The Ocklawaha Chapter of the D A R met at Miss Hattie Allen home in Sorrento with hostesses Mrs Roy Sanders and Mrs M F Cowart. Papers on National Defense were read and Congressman Sol Blume spoke on The Heart and Soul of the Constitution. members discussed the U S stance, defense, and safeguarding citizens and property.
A motel Rally Day service will end Sunday morning during the regular church service at 11 45 o clock in the Methodist church. The program is by the Sunday School and arranged by the Rally Day committee chaired by Mrs W M Kennedy. An invitation is extended to all to attend this service.
Tracy M. Kramer who was taken to Orange General Hospital last week had an operation Monday morning and is getting along nicely. Tracy Jr. who left the University due to ill health is also improving and expects to return soon to Gainesville.
Dr Heber D Ketcham, who was taken ill last week, is reported much improved. His daughter Mrs Q O Bowman of Tampa is staying with him during his illness and Mr Bowman visits frequently. Friends wish him a speedy recovery.
Mr and Mrs Thomas David return from Guilford Conn and will run the Hotel Mount Dora dining room as the Coffee Shoppe opening season on Thursday October 21.
Mount Dora’s Chamber of Commerce dominates local business life with 200 officers and a downtown office. Leaders include Geo J White as president and Alfred Rehbaum as vice president, with a director slate and advisory committee. The town also hosts an active Kiwanis club of leading citizens.
Lake County Chapter representatives will attend a two day Red Cross regional conference in Orlando October 21 22 to plan the Fall membership campaign and expand activities in Florida and Southern Alabama. Senator Claude Pepper will speak along with state and national officials including H J Hughes William Carl Hunt and more. The session opens with lunch at the Chamber of Commerce Building and will be at the San Juan Hotel while a Pensacola meeting October 19 precedes it. The film Behind the Flood Headlines will be shown at all sessions.
Last week the council noted an oversite in action on a payment of 175 dollars to H L Drugg for part cost of a front walk for his new store. Drugg declined to accept the money after being called at midnight when the matter was disposed.
Frank Drake cultivated two large avocado trees at his home on Seventh Avenue at Alexander Street. After severe freezing years ago he pruned them back, and they recovered to full size bearing fruit this year. One tree produced especially fine fruit weighing two to two and a half pounds with smooth skin and rich flavor.
The American Legion Mount Dora Post No 35 invites visiting Legionnaires to attend the monthly meeting held on the first Monday at 8 p m in City Hall.
Miss Emily Battle, Mount Dora High School class of 1936, has a position as stenographer with Vaughn Griffin Packing Company in Honey-in-the-Hills, starting October 4. She took a commercial course at Eustis and placed sixth in a state-wide stenography contest at Lakeland among about two hundred entrants.
S. S. Sadler Jr. was elected vice president of the University of Florida sophomore class in Thursday elections. About eight hundred sophomores enrolled. 493 voted, giving Sadler 247 votes on the Independent ticket against a Democratic league opponent amid campus politics deadlock.
S. S. Sadler Jr escaped with slight injuries after a two car collision in Eustis Saturday night. Allan L. Poucher of Wauchula Miss Reddick and Miss Virginia Hargis of Umatilla suffered multiple injuries. Poucher fractured pelvis and mild brain concussion while Miss Hargis fractured back and Miss Reddick dislocated elbow and fractured ribs. All were taken to Lake County Medical Center and Poucher to University infirmary this week. The Sadler car overturned after being struck broadside by a vehicle driven by James LaRoe of Eustis.
The Moose initiated a large class of candidates Monday night with a degree and drill team from Moose Haven Jerseyville and a delegation from Orlando. Brothers from out of state lodges attended the initiatory services and refreshments followed the meeting.
