The Post Office Department urges mailing Christmas packages by December 1 to ensure timely delivery. A 1941 precedent required 21 900 mail cars between December 12 and 24, and this year shortages loom as extra cars go to the armed services. Rail and truck resources are strained as Army and private owners hesitate to lend vehicles.
Mount Dora Chapter No. 103 Order of the Eastern Star will hold a memorial service next Sunday at 3 p.m. The public is invited. After the ceremonies flowers will be taken to Forrest Cemetery to place on graves of deceased members. All Stars are asked to bring cut flowers or ferns for the observance.
The Mount Dora Art League will meet December 3 at 7:30 PM at the home of Mrs. Wilson Gith, 1021 East Third Avenue.
The Grand View Hotel opens its dining room for Thanksgiving with a menu featuring turkey ham and fixings. Improvements include Florida’s first fully automatic heating plant, plus interior remodeling with new furniture carpets and enhanced lighting. Mr and Mrs Broom promote the hotel as a premier Mount Dora destination.
Florida Telephone Corp urges residents not to call for the time due to war demands. President Otto Wettstein III stresses Aircraft Warning calls must be completed within three minutes after sighting aircraft, leaving no time for unessential time checks. Mount Dora residents are asked to cooperate.
The Lions Club met with the Lake County Chamber at their annual gathering in Eustis on Monday night at Hotel Mount Dora. No further report is available this week.
Seaboard announces Dec 6 changes to its New York to Florida routes. The Silver Meteor adds an inaugural section from New York, Sun Queen extended to St Petersburg, and both Meteor sections follow updated routes to Baldwin and Jacksonville with converging schedules at Wildwood.
The Princess Theatre hosts a firearms exhibit in a window display once part of the Wayside Packing House storefront. The collection includes muskets rifles pistols and bayonets from the Revolutionary War to World War I owned by Mount Dora residents loaned for the show. The display, labeled for identification, draws notable local interest a bayonet with a distinctive shape is featured. The window is just north of the theatre.
The Mount Dora Rationing Board credits volunteers for registration and computation of fuel oil rations. Names include Mesdames Nelson Zell Hubbard Richards Conner Norman Morley McDonald MacArthur Montgomery Christie Cleary and Messrs Porter Nelson Matthews Breckenridge Denbroeder Engelhard Maben Holler Miner Holliger Norris Morse. Rationing office will prepare coupons next week. Coffee rationing allows purchase without prior registration and November 29 stamp 27 for one pound coffee.
The Home Demonstration Club reports mending days for soldiers are on Tuesdays not Thursdays as previously announced. All women willing to help should report at the Community Building in the social rooms, forenoon or afternoon, to do alterations and repairs for soldiers.

Lt and Mrs James S Bryant visited Mrs Bryant's parents Alfred and Mrs Shrupp of Mount Plymouth after Lt Bryant completed officer candidate and is assigned to anti aircraft units at Camp Davis North Carolina. Ensign Frederick W Sleight, Harvard Naval Business graduate, joins Naval Stations Trinidad distributing officer for the U S Base. Naval Transport plane trip from Miami reported without incident. climate and country praised.
The Mount Dora American Red Cross annual meeting was led by Dr. R. W. Dickson at the Red Cross rooms on East Fifth Avenue. Officials noted a War Bond Drive and November meetings to send officers’ names to headquarters, with extensive sewing, knitting, and dressings work and looming yarn shortages through January.
Orlando speaker John F Rudy urged improved warning systems for blackouts and daytime alerts. He noted siren timing issues and uneven coverage, urged frequent practice blackouts, and highlighted red tape from Tampa to New York. Lake County Chamber plans attendance. Barnett named director. Red Cross meeting set. Kiwanians invited to Camp Beaulieu dinner. Clark Dillenbeck won the war saving stamp.
The War Production Board urged city leaders civic clubs chambers of commerce merchants and citizens to stop outdoor Christmas lighting this year to conserve critical materials electricity and labor. Indoor lighting remains allowed. WPB estimates eliminating outdoor lights could save 50 600 000 kilowatt hours annually enough for a 50 000 population city.
The people of Mount Dora and winter visitors are invited to a Union Thanksgiving Service at 10:30 AM Thursday at First Baptist Church. Clergy from local churches will lead prayers and scripture with planned music and blessing readings.
