State Board of Health reports Mount Dora water from a deep well is clean and palatable. A centrifugal pump delivers 750 gallons per minute to an aerator and storage tank with trace chlorine, yielding "very good" sanitary quality per samples dated September 1938.
The Community church Ladies Aid announce their annual sale of aprons and useful articles to be held on Wednesday afternoon in November. Proceeds support church work and local needs. The event promises a variety of handcrafted and practical items.
The Mount Dora Havana cruise runs November 27 to December 3 aboard the steamship Cuba from Port Tampa with Key West stopovers. An all expense packed trip includes hotel in Havana and guided sightseeing. Registrations are urged through G. H. Peabody, director.
The 1938 proclamation urges all Monn Dora residents to observe Armistice Day November 11 at 11 00 a m. The fire siren will sound for one minute and citizens should stand in silent reverence for those who could not hear cease firing. Merchants and residents are asked to display the flag.
Plans for the 32nd annual Christmas Seal sale are underway and set to begin on Thanksgiving Day. Key organizers include Mrs. Ralph Roumillat from the Jacksonville state office, Lake County secretary Mrs. H. Reed Edmunds of Leesburg, and Mrs. J. D. Pease of the Lake County TB and Health Association. Local committee members listed are Mrs. Pease, Charles Marsh, and Prof. D. D. Rose from Mount Dora schools.
Mount Dora High School celebrates its first Homecoming with a 8:00 PM football game against Tavares High School at the school athletic field. A 7:00 PM parade forms at Fourth and Donnelly with all students and student fans. Sponsors include Doris Chamberlain LaVerne Townsend from Mount Dora and Josephine Breckenridge Ruby Prevatt from Tavares.
A wrapper tobacco hand grown in Lake County in 1897 by W. C. Butts is shown in the Topic window. Experts say it is the finest tobacco of its kind they have seen and it remains undamaged after more than four decades of storage. Butts notes yields of about 800 pounds per acre and values between $1.00 and $1.20 per pound.
The Ladies Aid of the Methodist church will host a chicken pilau dinner at the church on Thursday evening, November 17, at 5 30 o clock.
Dr. Sherman president of Tampa University will speak at the Kiwanis luncheon with no announced topic. Earlier he will address high school students at 10 30 on Education After High School. County Agent Norris urged reforestation using idle land and seedling pines with modest costs. Guests included Wylie Gillespie Ralph Rhodes and A M Englehard. George Keller won the attendance prize.
Lake County Federation of Women’s Clubs will host a program Wednesday November 16 at the Leesburg Woman’s Club. Dr. Terry Bird director of the Lake County Health Department and his staff plus Miss Kincaid District Supervisor of Nurses will lead the program. The session starts 10 30 a m and extends into mid afternoon with opportunities for personal conferences. Sponsored by the Lake County Tuberculosis and Health Association.
Mayor M. V. Simpson proclaims a Red Cross membership drivefrom Armistice Day through Thanksgiving Day urging all citizens to renew or join Red Cross in Mount Dora. The message highlights local and national relief efforts and the organization's ongoing community welfare work.
The traffic signal at Fifth Avenue and McDonald Street was relocated one block east to Fifth and Alexander with a blinker at Fifth McDonald. Chief Story directed drivers to the new intersection. Traffic flow improved though a few drivers still ignore the red light.
The annual Red Cross Roll Call runs from the end of this week through Armistice Day to Thanksgiving. Miss Margaret Lewis is Roll Call chairman. Memberships include Annual one dollar Contributing five dollars Sustaining ten dollars and Supporting twenty five. Half of each dues goes to national headquarters in Washington, ten cents to Lake County Chapter and the rest to the local treasury for home relief work. Mount Dora pity supports disaster relief with prior year totals and recent gifts. Dues and contributions are used only for relief, not salaries. Members can pay Miss Lewis at 728 McDonald street or Mrs. George Keller at the Topic office. The article notes Mount Dora civic groups and Chamber of Commerce activities.
Mount Dora delegates join Sections 6 and 7 of the State Federation of Junior Woman's Clubs in Sanford. Mary Stewart McLeod chaired, A. L. White spoke on safety, with Mrs. Land and Mrs. Hofreiter guiding welfare and money making program discussions. Attendees included club officers and members. Bill Glenn elected president of the Florida Gridiron Club at a Jacksonville banquet.
Carl S. Graves, owner and operator of the Mount Dora business, was elected a director at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Mount Dora held on Tuesday.
Villa Dora Hotel resident Mr Graves, a prominent Mount Dora businessman, becomes board member to fill the vacancy from H. H. Mallory's death. He serves as Kiwanis president elect, Chamber of Commerce director, Yacht Club member, and Park Commission member, with a record of civic involvement and city upbuilding.
