Mount Dora in Central Florida offers homeseekers a citrus rich welcome. The town on Lake Dora spans six and a half miles, 262 feet above sea level, with Lake Dora feeding waterways to Jacksonville and the Atlantic.
Captain Ben C. Jones outlined Red Cross Public Health Nursing efforts in Florida with 10 215 visits to the sick and 11 278 school child examinations in the past year. Lake County supported Miss Ella Bell Jones salary from 1937 to this year and members funded monthly contributions. The annual Roll Call runs November 11 to Thanksgiving Day.
Mount Dora Boy Scouts collect and repair old toys to donate to King’s Daughters and other welfare groups for Christmas. Parts may be reused if repair is impossible. Call Cham ber of Commerce or Paul Mosteller to arrange pickup. Upcoming events include the Eustis board of review on November 10 and Mount Dora court of honor on November 17. all scouts and supporters urged to attend.
Dr Sherman president of Tampa University will address High School students on Education After High School Thursday November 10 at 10 30 a m in the High School auditorium He will also speak at a Kiwanis luncheon the same day J G LaDue reports the sale of the Traxler house on Highland avenue to David Sellers of Mount Dora Mr and Mrs Sellers have repainted redecorated and now reside there
The Hallowe'en Carnival on Donnelly Avenue drew huge crowds with a parade from city hall to the carnival entrance led by King Stuart Sadler and Queen Shirley Coen. Mayor Simpson crowned the royal pair as judges awarded prizes for originality and prettiest costumes. Events included an Amateur Show, marionette acts, bowling, games, and a busy refreshment stand. the PTA reported net proceeds over 150 dollars despite some outstanding expenses.
Mr and Mrs Edward Cashmar of Bridgewater Conn have rented 410 Orange Ave. Mr and Mrs Louis Southwick of Peabody Mass rent the King cottage at 355 East Seventh Avenue and will arrive this month. Mr and Mrs Philip Bachert of Buffalo will occupy the Lewis bungalow No 801 Grandview. Mrs J P Margeson of Sharon Mass spends winter at the Grand View Hotel. Dr Burd head of the Lake County Health Department will speak Tuesday November 15 at 8 pm in the Community Building on the Wasserman test. Everyone is invited especially members of all civic organizations.
A Townsend Club gathering is planned for Monday November 7 at 7 30 p m in the Community Building. Attendees can obtain the Election issue of the National Weekly and gain useful information.
The Golden Hurricanes travel to Ocoee for a Friday afternoon game slated for 4:00 p.m. The match promises a strong showdown as fans rally behind the team.
The Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce promotes the town to tourist friends and homeseekers, inviting investigation of the central Florida region known as the midst and hills. A beautiful illustrated booklet about Mount Dora is available upon request, mailed by the chamber.
The mayor M V Simpson extends a cordial invitation to residents and friends to visit Mount Dora during the coming winter season. He describes the city as a homey, progressive, and hospitable place with friendly citizenship.
Mr and Mrs Camra of Sanae Ohio have completed purchase of a 30 acre tract near the Eustis Tavares highway from the Bank of Tavares. They plan beautification around the lake, dredge for a good shoreline, build a modern sandwich shop as the first structure, and create rear lots with a circular drive. The project aims to expand West Mount Dora’s business area and attract further enterprises.
A caucus is called by 100 citizens to nominate candidates for town offices. The meeting will be held at the Community Building on Thursday November 10 at 7 30 PM.
R. E. Norris Lake County Agent addresses Kiwanis on crop variation and reforestation. Last week Thomas H. Cooley explained four proposed State Constitution amendments to be voted in November and answered questions to clarify their meaning. He noted one amendment affects public school funding.
Dr Heber D Ketcham attended the inauguration of his nephew Dr Charles Burgess Ketcham as president of Mount Union College Alliance Ohio on October 20 at Memorial Hall The ceremony drew educators from across the country and featured a church related college hopeful note from the new president The day included a luncheon conference and banquet following the program
In observance of Armistice Day Dr A M Brodie will preach Sunday morning at the Community church on the theme Twenty Years After Is it to be Peace or War What Can We Do About It Rev Kenneth G Rogers at the Methodist church will discuss Realistic Pacifism earlier services noon or evening times not specified.
Mount Dora 4 H Club member Ralph Townsend won a state handicraft contest earning a $50 gold watch. Townsend has a $219 value in crafted items and a $775 club profit total plus a $100 UF scholarship. He is Mount Dora High’s senior quarterback and 4-H club president planning to enter the University next fall. The town offers a Donnelly Park recreation center with tennis, volleyball, and other leisure options for visitors.
The Second Homecoming at First Baptist Church of Mount Dora on October 30 drew many visitors and former members. Rev. Overhiser opened with a talk on early struggles, Rev. Acree led the 11 oclock services, and Rev. Hay spoke at 3. A basket lunch followed. a Building Fund received substantial contributions.
The King's Daughters announce a food sale on Saturday morning November 12 at 418 Donnelly Avenue next to the Topic office. Proceeds support the group’s community efforts and local projects.
At Tuesday night meeting Wylie Gillespie, county engineer, reported WPA accepted minor plan changes after Atlanta review. Bids will be advertised for the water system improvements to assure ample supply and fire safety. A traffic light on US 441 at Morningside Drive may be installed with Mount Dora supplying current. Outdoor municipal lighting is under advisement for permanence.
The Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club back a Mount Dora entry for the Orange Box Regatta with at least five sailboats. Final races occur on Washington's Birthday alongside the Florida Waterways Congress annual meeting. District heats precede February 22 event. H G Dimsdale of the Mount Dora Yacht Club joins the Regatta committee and will meet Sunday at New Smyrna.
Miss Ida Conklin of Jacksonville daughter of Dr and Mrs R C Conklin leaves Tuesday for New Orleans to attend the annual Southern Historical Association meeting on November 3 and 5. She is Supervising Editor of the Early American Imprints Inventory in the State Office of Historic Records Research Jacksonville accompanying Mrs Sue A Mahoner State Director of Historic Records Research.
