Churches Welcome Visitors In Mount Dora Community

Mount Dora hosts five active churches led by Rev R W Acree at the Baptist church Rev A M Brodie of the Congregational group Rev Kenneth G Rogers at the Methodist and Rev G G Prince at the Church of God The City’s churches cooperate to uplift the community and winter visitors are greeted warmly at Sunday services and during tours nearby towns also offer welcoming churches.

Visitors from Quippa and Youngstown consider Mount Dora

Mr and Mrs E J Malloy of Quippa Pa Mr and Mrs M Gearon and Miss Jane McFarlin of Youngstown Ohio were guests of Mr and Mrs R T McClellan the past week They toured groves and homes and plan to return soon to make this their permanent home.

State Welfare Board records indicate September WPA referrals in Florida were 6 634 compared with 7 469 in August. Officials expect October figures to show a further decrease, signaling an improving economy.

Cooley To Probe Red Activities In Florida

Hon. Thos H Cooley state representative and committee chairman will open public hearings in Tampa in November to determine if communism is being encouraged in Florida schools and to locate communist leaders. He plans to study WPA involvement and believes thousands of communists operate in Tampa influencing unions and business.

Knights of Pythian Activities of Past Week

Knights of Pythian members held a series of lodge events across the week. Sixty Sisters attended a meeting with luncheon hosted by Knights. Knights from Myrtle Lodge in DeLand and Mount Dora Lodge in Leesburg conferred Knights ranks on candidates, with receptions and gatherings noted.

Homecoming Day at Baptist Church Set for October 30

The Baptist church plans a full Homecoming Day on Sunday with morning afternoon and evening services and a noon basket dinner. Former members and town churches are invited to attend afternoon events led by former pastors. Speakers include Rev F W Overhiser at 10 30 am Rev G T Hinton at 11 am Rev Acree guiding singing at 3 pm and Rev A A Stanley at 7 30 pm. Excavation for the new Sixth and Tremain church is nearly complete and construction will start soon.

PWA Grant Corrected In Local Water System Plan

Thief Shot by Deputies After Resist Arrest near Lake Kerr

A trailer resident named Armstrong resisting arrest near Canal and Lake Jem fired on Deputies Claude Barrett and Al Hammond of Eustis. A coroner's jury ruled Barrett acted in self defense. Armstrong sought for theft of four outboard motors from Jasper Wolfe of Howey in 1936. A motor found in his car had been stolen from Belle Isle Camp on Lake Kerr on September 28. Armstrong had a Florida police record since 1931 and a $100 reward had been offered for his arrest and return to Elizabethton, Tenn. He is survived by his widow, his father in Elizabethton, Tenn., and his mother and sister in Atlanta.

Mount Dora will celebrate National Art Week from November 1 to 8 with artist exhibits by Mount Dora Art League members in various stores and other displays in Eustis and Tavares.
