Mount Dora High School to Hold Diploma Day Friday

The 24th graduating class will receive diplomas at the Community Building ceremony Friday night signaling summer break. Reopening is planned for Sept 8 with staff largely unchanged led by supervising principal D D Ros ross. The event featured baccalaureate remarks by Rev James Sutley and performances by the junior choir and high school glee club.

Honorary Degree Given Rev. James

Rev. James, former pastor of the local Methodist church, received an honorary Doctor of Divinity at Florida Southern College's May 21 commencement. The award honors his tireless work in religious education as chairman of the Florida Mrs. C. A. Killian of Sylvan Shores.

Dog Sitter George Keller Takes On Busy Niche

George Keller, former associate editor of the Topic, now runs a dog sitting service. Mr and Mrs C E Brooks testify to his reliability as he calms and entertains their puppy with biscuits and affectionate care. He even spent an evening with the dog during their funeral trip to Mullberry.

Center Plans Arts and Swimming Summer Programs

The advisory committee named Harold Goforth as recreation chairman to run a youth center summer program with arts and craft classes and swimming and lifesaving lessons under Robert Bardwell and William Barker. The club house will stay open this summer under Goforth with volunteer adult supervisors and parental support sought for swimming lessons. A picnic and boat ride are planned for center members.

Mount Dora Seeks Final Push For Cancer Drive

With three days left, Mrs. W. M. Kennedy leads Mount Dora’s appeal for funds to the American Cancer Society. The town quota is 165 dollars, about 5 cents per resident, with the Legion giving 25 dollars and the Lions 10 dollars. Kiwanis report due today as civic groups respond to a nationwide effort.

Blood Bank reports Mount Dora generous with a mobile unit. In a half day 30 donors gave blood at the Community Building sponsored by the Lions Club. The unit’s full day record is 52 donors. Local associates praise the town’s response and dedication to plasma for emergencies.

Yacht Club Notes Highlight Working Models and Dinners

Arthur Dufour of New Bedford presented working models for an old whaler and a clipper ship to the yacht club. Revival Services Begin At Local Baptist Church

Brooks Kin Attend Pittman Funeral

Mr and Mrs C E Brooks Sr of Mount Dora and their son and his wife attended the funeral of Mrs Brooks brother Joseph B Pittman in Mullberry Florida. Mr Pittman died at the home of his daughter Mrs Sim Cozart with seven sons and two daughters present except one son serving in Africa.

FSU Summer School Registration Sets Dates

Florida State University Tallahassee says registration for the summer session will occur Monday June 16 at the school office. Classes start the following Tuesday with the first term ending July 23. The second session begins July 24 and runs through August.

Sugar Stamp No 12 Valid On June First

The agriculture department announced that Sugar stamp No 12 becomes valid June 1, one month ahead of the original notice. Individual consumers may buy 10 pounds each on the new ration, but supplies must last until October 31 when price and rationing controls may expire unless extended by the government to speed movement.

Louis Clayton Jerue 63 longtime Mount Dora contractor and former councilman died suddenly at his home 933 Grandview Ave Wednesday morning. He contributed to major buildings including First National Bank Lakeside Inn annex and Mount Dora hotel. Miss Florida 1947 Pageant in St Petersburg

Beauty contest in St Petersburg Monday and Tuesday will select city winners to advance to the Miss Florida contest and Miss America competition in Atlantic City. Florida Junior Chamber of Commerce and Jaycee clubs sponsor with the Outdoor Writers Association of America convention.
