Citrus pioneer James W. Simpson marks 98th birthday
Mount Dora’s James Warren Simpson known as Uncle Jim to friends turns 98 on May 31. The citrus grower still active in the community recalls his life from a log cabin birth in 1878 to founding local packing houses and the Mount Dora Growers Cooperative. He lives on Donnelly Street extension with routine days including lunch with driver Paul Bourget and visits from Lillie Mae Pitts. He notes Mount Dora’s growth and says the city remains the nicest place to live despite change.

Mount Dora Topic Wins Best Newspaper Award
Mount Dora Topic publisher A M Liveright accepts the Best Newspaper prize in the Better Newspaper Contest run by the Fort Lauderdale Press association. The Topic topped general excellence among Florida weekly papers. The event capped a three day meeting in St Augustine with nearly 300 publishers attending.

Ten Year Old Burned As Home Explodes In Fire
A 10 year old East Town man Coleman Randolph suffered second and third degree burns covering 80 percent of his body during an explosion and fire while lighting a wood stove at his home on Lincoln Avenue. He was treated at Waterman Memorial Hospital then moved to a Gainesville burn center. Randolph’s wife Cora, 68, was treated at the scene for minor burns. The fire, caused by a kerosene or gasoline container exploding, destroyed the one story frame house.

Dr. Jerome P. Keuper president of Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne was commencement speaker as 54 seniors received diplomas at Florida Central Academy. Breakfast preceded the ceremony with remarks by L. E. Allen and S. C. Brookes. Local graduates include Julia Hatch Zetta Morrison Catherine Truly and others from Eustis Apopka and nearby areas.
