County Chamber of Commerce Votes to Dismiss Paul Harber

Lake County Chamber of Commerce directors meeting at Tavares discussed dismissing Paul Harber while planning a social gathering in Mount Dora with county support. They opposed legislative trade restraints linked to Florida State Senate Bill No 304 and urged the Florida Chamber to study the issue. A canal cleanup fund request was denied, and a $200 reimbursement for the Orlando exhibit was approved. The auditor was authorized to adjust a $34.16 debit item from the 1930 fairs.

Memorial Service To Be Held Sunday

A community memorial service will be held at the Community Building Auditorium next Sunday at 11:00 AM. Mount Dora Post 35 American Legion sponsors, with Geo J White E E Nutter and J M Turner heading a committee. All city churches participate. no morning services. Clergy Eld er Bouterse and Spencer join Legion in a shared program. ex service men and wives urged to attend. Legion Auxiliary, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts also participate.

Kiwanis Miami Convention Reflected by Local Club

Kiwanis members praised the Miami convention with reports from French Urquhart and Richardson. Miss Louise Lane and Jeannette Pike entertained as Col R N Shearer failed to appear, while talk on vocational guidance and community service framed the meeting. The club looks to future plans as Rev John I Wean addresses members and all in town are urged to attend.

Memorial Sunday Observance in Mount Dora Churches

On May 24 Memorial Sunday the Mount Dora churches will join the American Legion Post in a Community Memorial Service at 11:00 AM in the Community Building. Mayor W E Lackey urges citizens and neighbors to honor the dead.

Death at Mount Dora crate mill cuts life of David S. Simpson

David S. Simpson, a Mount Dora leader and long time postmaster, died when a 12x12 yellow pine beam slipped during construction of a new crate and lumber mill. The beam struck him on the head at about 5 15 p m Wednesday April 20. He served as postmaster for nineteen years and was a prominent local figure. Funeral plans have not been announced.

Mount Dora Town Council Not To Pay For Hostess

A special meeting in Mount Dora Florida reviewed the petition to continue employing Mrs Evans as hostess of the Community Building during summer. The committee on Public Buildings stated there is no plan to close the building and urged it remain open for community life, while noting the aim to avoid hindering its use this season.

Library Fund Grows With Small Donations and Plans Garden

Two more dollars join the Library Fund increasing totals from fifty seven to fifty nine dollars. The fund aims for sixty dollars with another potential contribution. A rock garden project is planned for Donnelly Park, expected to take about two and a half years to finish funded by contributions and card parties.

Lake County newspaper staff enjoyed a day at Clermont hosted by the Trimbey Properties and Mr. and Mrs. Charles R. Short. The group toured roller coaster roads and nurseries, rode a cypress runabout on Lake Minnehaha, and finished with a fried chicken supper at a Trim bey property pavilion. The outing, with plans for future canal and lake connections, highlighted local waterways and scenery.

Rollins College Opens Oceanfront Seashore Camp

Funds from Mrs. Caleb I. Johnson provide a 200 by 400 foot seashore camp at New Smyrna Florida for Rollins College. The site features a large pavilion for 50 to 60 students and faculty, a fully equipped kitchen dining area reception hall bedrooms showers and beach facilities. President Holt notes the property enhances college picnics and outings.

Real estate activity increases as tourist season ends with several transactions recorded. W C Butts sells the Butts Block to Mrs Geo A Gibbons of Umatilla. George C Thompson buys 50 feet on Fifth Avenue to expand his home grounds. Elmer and Mrs. Lewis acquire the Baldwin property at Donnelly and Ninth Avenues to operate a small hotel. Lake County Finance Company sells Lewis property and buys others. Mount Dora Sales Company reports a J P Donnelly estate lot sale to Mrs Helen C Dorne. Myers property on Lake Gertrude sold to a Mr Parker of Eustis who is preparing the property for use as a residence.
