Red Cross to Issue Fiftieth Anniversary Stamp

The Red Cross marks its 50th by a two color 2 cent stamp to go on sale May 21 at Washington and Dansville post offices. The stamp features a kneeling nurse before a globe from the 1930 poster The Greatest Mother. 50 million stamps will be printed and distributed nationwide.

Welcoming J W White of Jacksonville Visitor to Mount Dora

J W White from Jacksonville, a frequent visitor to his son George J White of Mount Dora, is noted as a prominent joiner. White, editor of The Fraternal Record and leader in Odd Fellows and other orders, is hailed for world record membership in fraternal groups and long Florida ties dating to 1881. He has built forty buildings in Jacksonville over forty years and lives at 1441 Market Street.

Sudden Death of H C Rainey Shocks Mount Dora Friends

Telegram from H C Rainey Jr of Cincinnati says his father H C Rainey died suddenly at his son’s home on Tuesday May 12. Funeral services set for May 14 at 2 30 p m at Stanley Funeral Home Cincinnati, burial in Cincinnati. Rainey longtime winter resident of Mount Dora will be greatly missed by local friends. He came from Hendersonville North Carolina and lived on the Tavares Road before selling his home this spring.

Collins H. Gere Dies In Mass

Collins H. Gere, 76, former editor and publisher of the Daily Gazette in Northampton, died yesterday afternoon after a short illness with pneumonia. He had returned from Florida earlier in the month and grew critically ill midweek. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. at his home with Rev. James N. Armstrong Jr. officiating. burial in Bridge Street Cemetery. He leaves a wife, daughter, two sisters, a brother, two grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and two foster sons.

Rapid Sale Of Lots In Donnelly Block

The Donnelly home block sees three more lot sales this week. D. F. Gorham purchases the home place with 122 feet frontage on Donnelly street and 165 feet depth, handled by Quixley Realty. J. J. West Realty reports two more lots on Sixth avenue and at Fifth avenue and Alexander street with cottages, plus a former sale near Sixth and Alexander to Dr. Conklin by D. C. Sherman. Three valuable lots remain, but inquiries suggest they will sell soon.

Library Fund Contributions Update

Contributions to the Library Fund continue with a $2.00 gift from Mr. and Mrs. Harold Coleman. The Topic's final report on April 30 showed $44.00. since then $13.00 more, bringing the total to $57.00. Additional gifts may exist but are only those reported or handed to the Topic.

Mount Dora Opens League Play With Eustis

Mount Dora defeated Eustis in the Lake County Baseball League opener at Eustis last Thursday at 4:00 pm. Cooley pitched superbly for Mount Dora while Igou struggled with 11 walks. Mt Dora, led by solid defense and timely hits, earned praise for a strong league debut and prep for today’s home game against Clermont at Heim Field.

Busy Session Passes Gas Franchise in Mount Dora

Mount Dora council held a lengthy Tuesday night session with mayor and clerk present. They approved a second reading granting a franchise to Florida Gas Company to supply commercial gas, awaiting mayoral signature to order materials and begin work.

The paper corrects last week’s report that Miss Emma Leavenworth bought Mrs. Alice Hall’s home on Alexander Street near Seventh Avenue. No sale occurred. Leavenworth rents the house for a year and Hall wishes to retain ownership.

Carl Fish of the Florida Citrus Exchange reports a strong boost in canned grapefruit distribution after exchanges intervened to stabilize the market. Clearing Lake Ola Of Water Hyacinth

Work began Tuesday to clear Lake Ola of the water hyacinth a pest that could cover the lake. The plant was introduced seven years ago by Dr. Lust who admired its beauty. The Tangerine Improvement Society organized the effort with 14 to 15 men aiding the start. Efforts have also targeted the Apopka Canal where hyacinth threatens navigation. The piece urges constant monitoring of waterways to prevent rapid spread and notes the Wekiwa river in central Florida is choked, hindering boat passage.

Mount Dora Observes National Music Week

Mount Dora hosts a National Music Week concert in the Municipal Auditorium sponsored by Mayor W. E. Lackey and directed by W. J. Ferris. The Mount Dora orchestra and Glee Club performed with accompanists including Gor man and Mrs. Louise Ault. Soloists included Mr. Ferris Miss Louise Lane and Mr. Ray LaBreck. The program featured patriotic numbers and familiar songs. Mayor Lackey gave a short intermission talk.
