Kiwanis to hear forestry expert Mr Hoskins at Mount Dora

Mount Dora Kiwanis Club hosts industrial forester Robert N. Hoskins of Seaboard Air Line Railway as the speaker on new wood uses and memorial forests. He trained at Missouri and Iowa State and joined Florida Forest and Park Service in 1942 as extension forester. The meeting also welcomes the high school class and sponsor as guests.

Racing Resumes at Orlando Sanford Track After Ban Lift

The Orlando Sanford Kennel Club track opens Saturday night May 19 for a sixty day greyhound season with weekday races at 8 p.m. Eight events per night feature daily doubles and quinellas. Over two hundred dogs are at the track with more arriving daily.

Service Club Gala Attracts Soldiers With Flowers and Orchestra

Last Saturday the Service Men's Club offered an orchestra and abundant flowers making a gala event. Attendance from Apopka Winter Garden and Orlando has dropped recently but hopes rise after the enjoyable night. Planned activities include a boat ride and more dances. Decorations were arranged Friday by junior hostesses with a white picket fence and blooming flowers as the centerpiece. Thanks are given to Martha Williamson for the many flowers.

Mrs. David J. Eisenhower mother of General Dwight Eisenhower in Abilene receives the Golden Rule Foundation award for 1945. Gen. Eisenhower sends a cablegram of greetings. Dr. J. W. Stover, her cousin in Mount Dora, plans to host her and her secretary next winter to enjoy Florida hospitality and Mount Dora oranges.

At a Friday banquet on April 13 the boys football and basketball teams and the girls basketball team were honored. Cpl Otis Hale of Stewart Field reports two weeks in hospital after an operation and enjoying his hospital stay. Lieut Samuel Gould Sadler remains in service with unclear details.

Mother's Day Reunion for Mrs. Clarence Cooper

Mrs Clarence Cooper enjoyed an emotional Mother's Day with sons Paul and Russell Harris both in the service. Paul flew from Saipan to Mount Dora and Russell arrived from Savannah to surprise their mother on the holiday. The brothers had not been together in six years and plan soon to return to duty.

Scouts Win Multiple Awards at Lake County Camporee

Eighteen boys from Mount Dora Troop of Boy Scouts attended the Lake County Camporee at Umatilla on May 4 and 5. One patrol earned five of five awards while another took four of five in Scout Activities proficiency under Senior Patrol Leaders Bobby Turner and Howard Nutter and Patrol Leaders Clyde Mosteller Bill Conkling and Ross Dutton.

Band Plans Boat Ride and Picnic

The Band is scheduled for a Wednesday evening outing with a boat ride and picnic supper. Members meet at the Yacht Club at 4, cruise for an hour, then go to Trimble Park for a six o'clock supper with parents. Each attendee brings their own table service. An evening boat ride through the lakes follows.
