Captain Harry J Hopcraft is home after service in the European theatre where he was wounded three times. The last injury was a critical shrapnel fragment in his heart. He appears well but is not fully recovered. After a thirty day leave he will report to a hospital in Texas.

A Baptist church schedules a morning Thanksgiving message on Eu day and an evening informal worship at 8 p m with a sermon by the pastor.
The 11 o clock service will feature Dr. James A Richards preaching on Victories Present and To Come. Last Sunday the Lord's Supper was observed and the choir performed I Am the Light with Miss Alice Davis as soloist. Mrs. George H. Peabody presided at the Woman's Association meeting in the church parlor with devotional duties by Miss Margaret Lewis. Mrs. George E. Seagrave read from a friend’s writings in Wellesley, the excerpts sparking interest and discussion. A social hour and refreshments closed the season.
About 142 Scouts and Scouters from ten Lake County troops took part in the Annual District Camporee at Umatilla May 4 and 5. The event featured camping skills demonstrations, camp setup, cooking, and drills directed by Camporee staff and district officials.
Rep. Bob Sikes, on the House Military Affairs Committee, pushed for harsher treatment of German prisoners of war in the United States. Brig. Gen. B. M. Bryan announced tighter regulations removing beef and butter from camp menus and discontinuing beer and cigarettes in canteens. The Nazi salute was banned and work hours increased after the probe and sustained questions by Sikes.
Lake County Chamber of Commerce reports a May 16 meeting with Orange County Commissioners and others to discuss removing water hyacinths from Lake Apopka and central Florida lakes. The Girl Scouts plan a second food sale Saturday at 10 AM in the Donnelly Avenue store room near the O K Barber Shop. Donations of food or flowers are welcomed and organizers request calls to Mrs. Fletcher Crane for donations and cake donations with sugar provided. Thirty girls aim to fund a camp trip to Silver Glen Springs June 9 to 16, with five leaders and substantial costs expected.
Dr James Edgar Banks aged 79 dies after illness at his Eustis area home. Native of Sunderland Massachusetts a Harvard graduate he served as American consul at Bagdad and secretary to the American minister to Turkey. He excavated Bismya in 1903 for the University of Chicago and found an alabaster statue of King David. He taught at Chicago Toledo and Pennsylvania and authored many works. Private services set for May 11 at 11 am conducted by Dr Arthur Peabody Pratt.

Beginning May first the Mount Dora Public Library will operate on a reduced summer schedule. It will be open only on Mondays Wednesdays and Saturdays during the season.
A Nazi flag captured by the American First Army at Stolburg Germany is displayed in the lobby of the First National Bank. Private William F. Duggan Jr sent the flag here and it attracts much attention from visitors.
