A 5 percent DDT dust applied evenly over infested vegetables can control many pests in the home garden. Because DDT is toxic to humans, take precautions. It may be used on Irish potatoes anytime, but stop on tomatoes after fruit begins to ripen, on cabbage after heads form, and on collards a month before harvest. Wash any treated crop before eating.
