Leesburg Plans First Annual Watermelon Festival

Leesburg will stage a county wide watermelon fete in June with a parade picnic dinner street dance and amusements at Lakeside Park. Lake County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting in Clermont

The Lake County Chamber of Commerce holds its annual membership meeting in Clermont on Friday May 23 with a complimentary luncheon at noon. After observing Trimbey properties near Clermont the group returns for the 2 30 p m business session. The retiring board meets then the new board is seated and officers are elected. Fiscal year closes July 1 and the annual report is planned for the July meeting.

The Mount Dora Woman's Club rescheduled its May meeting from last Tuesday to Tuesday, May 20, at 3 p.m. in the Congregational church parlors. The event marks the last meeting until October and will feature Mrs. Lashar speaking on the Needlework Guild.

Gala Program Promises Big Night For Florida Radio Fans

On Friday evening, April 16, WLFA Clearwater opens its new Tampa Studio in the Hillsboro Hotel and begins NBC network broadcasts to Florida listeners. Frank Grasso's Tampa Symphony Orchestra will be a regular studio feature with programs from Clearwater St. Petersburg and Tampa on the WSUN WFLA NBC hookup. Russell Kay's State Press Scrap Book, arranged by Kay, will inaugurate the new Tampa studio next Friday, presented by the Florida Clipping Service to bring listeners the Best from the Press.

The Community Building receives a piano gift from Mrs. C. D. Smith via Mrs. David S. Simpson. Additional pianos from the Tourist Club, Tourist Dance Club, and Forum complete a three-piano setup for social rooms stage and auditorium. President H P Carpenter of Montverde School says Dr L M Spivey president of Southern College will preach the annual commencement sermon on Sunday morning June 8 at 11 o clock in the chapel on the school campus. On Tuesday night Dean Walter Matherly of the University of Florida will deliver the graduating address.

Franklin W. Hill Dies In Mount Dora At 70

Frank W. Hill of Cincinnati died at his Mount Dora home on Tuesday May 6th from a heart attack at age 70. He was a retired Palmer Hill Co. executive and a member of Hoffner Lodge of Masons. He served as Past Grand Councillor of the United Commercial Travelers and is survived by his widow Laurette, daughter Ruth Hill Bunch, and two sisters. He had been a winter visitor at the Villa Dora and a familiar figure in town.

Mount Dora’s Grand Old Man Donnelly Dies at 80

John P. Donnelly a Mount Dora pioneer and first mayor, died suddenly May 9 1930 at his home from a cerebral hemorrhage. Born February 5 1850 in Pennsylvania he helped found Mount Dora and guided its growth, building avenues for citrus farming and bringing the railroad. He planted historic oaks and favored civic progress, leaving a lasting legacy in Annie Donnelly Park and local institutions.

Citrus Growers Urged to Target Rust Mite Control Soon

Extension citrus pathologist-entomologist E F Debusk urges growers to focus on rust mite control over the next two months. Inspect groves weekly for five to six weeks, spray lime sulfur or sulfur dust at about 20 mites per square inch, and apply June oil emulsion for melanose and scale. Early, careful action may prevent heavy fruit drop and protect a potential large crop.

Murphree Portrait to Grace Florida State College Library

The Silver Jubilee week features the presentation of a portrait of Dr. A. A. Murphree, first president of the college. Gifted by friends, it will hang beside Dr. Edw. Conradi’s portrait in the library. Murphree led the institution from 1897 to 1909 through name changes before leading the University of Florida until 1927.

Rabbitry a Thriving Busin

The W. C. Williams rabbitry on the Tavares road near Mount is expanding into a large business with hundreds of rabbits of various ages. Williams has prize stock including registered bucks and does, and has won multiple Tampa fair prizes. He moved from Orange avenue to a larger facility to accommodate growth, with hutches filled and more space planned as the operation develops.

Kiwanis Clubs Host Sanford Visitors at Mount Dora

The Inter Club Relations committee of Kiwanis brought Sanford Kiwanis to Mount Dora for a visit led by President L. C. Smith. Sanford’s Jesi Fred Wilson praised Mount Dora Kiwanis and noted Sanford Kiwanis had a 100 percent attendance for the past 11 weeks. Scouts executive council members and Judge Don Cheney joined the gathering with other officials to discuss neighborly cooperation and community building.

Postponed Benefits For Eustis Boys Band Planned

After the death of J. P. Donnelly the community entertainment events to aid the Eustis Boys Band are postponed from Saturday to Monday. A concert tonight at the community Auditorium and a social tomorrow night will replace the original plan. Tickets remain on sale for both affairs.
