Mount Dora Temple Honored by Florida Grand Chief

Mount Dora Temple No. 12 of the Pythian Sisters celebrates having Sister Caro line Henry of Apopka as Florida Grand Chief installed April 30 in Tarpon Springs. On May 1 she visited Mount Dora Temple, with greens, flowers, and a floral tribute procession. The temple won first prize for efficiency, receiving a handmade altar cloth and bronze plaque crafted by the Grand Chief, to be displayed in a local jeweler’s window.

League Baseball To Open Eustis Today

The Lake county Baseball League opens today with 4 00 p m games and strong attendance expected. A Thursday after noon schedule runs May through September and a split season leads to a championship between first and second half winners. Admission is 25 cents for adults. Mount Dora fans are urged to attend the opening at Eustis and support J G Kirby as manager.

Lakes rise five inches after storm across region

Measurements on lakes Dora Beauclaire and Carlton Tuesday morning show levels five inches higher than before the storm, adding to already high water. A washout on the Dixie Highway near Fern Cottage and Mrs Dorne's home caused a cave in over half the road width, detouring traffic through East Town to bypass the hazard.

Concert Friday For Music Week

Mount Dora hosts a Music Week entertainment at the auditorium Friday night. After a busy week and a recent storm, organizers expect excellent numbers and a well worth attending program starting at 8:00 o clock. Residents from Mount Dora and nearby areas are invited.

The Florida Citrus Exchange reports exports to Europe are triple previous levels. The SS Delilian sailed for Liverpool Sunday with 14 000 boxes on its 174th carload, while buyers took one third of second grade fruit for the first time.

Mount Dora Flower Show Highlights Zellwood Exhibit

The Mount Dora Garden Club praised the Zellwood Laughlin Estate display at the recent flower show. A full truck load of flowers arrived from Zellwood under the estate head gardener. The club also thanked A. E. Bell for supplying and delivering orange boxes used as stands for the displays.

Auxiliary Enlists Aid for Lincoln Show and Poppy Drive

The American Legion Auxiliary met at the Legion Hall on Monday May 4 with good attendance. They reviewed a $2.50 gold piece won in a membership contest and pledged to help sell tickets for the Abraham Lincoln show on May 22 and 23 Legion night. Poppy day fundraising is planned, with Mrs Grady Cooley in charge of poppy sales May 23 and poppies available at the theater May 22. candy popcorn and peanuts will be sold by Mrs. Jackson and others. Mrs Overhiser reported on the Tampa convention memorial service and will present a full report next meeting. Refreshments were served after adjournment.

Mount Dora attracts steady growth as eighteen residence properties sell this year. Newcomers and winter visitors purchase homes, with Emma Leavenworth of Seattle moving into a Sixth Avenue property and plans for a bayfront water garden. Davenport’s Furniture Exchange opens at 132 Fifth Avenue, led by W M Davenport and son Hugh, after relocating from Clermont. A chicken canning venture by Mrs Anna Wasser is planned, with small containers for family portions. Economy Cash Grocery and Lake View Pharmacy bring in new families, while a Crate mill slated for fall promises jobs. Only three vacant stores remain north of Fourth Avenue as orange groves and property trades continue, signaling optimism for Mount Dora’s future.

Sixth Grades Give Excellent Program

The Salutatory by Dorothy Loveless opened a program of essays songs readings and piano numbers. Ted Eason sang in fishing regalia while L C Green read. A one act play Our Examination Day featured fifteen students with Nina McCurley and Howard Rutherford highlighted. Emily Battle valedictorian spoke on Mount Dora history and American Legion medals were awarded to Emily Battle and Woodrow Wingler.
