At a March 18 Family Night dinner the 1964 congregation honored founding Pastor Dr C A Carriel and charter members Dr Arthur Bennett Dr Herbert Book Dale Brown and A V Lent. Mrs A A Stanley recounted the church history from 1954 to 1964 and Dr Charles T Marty spoke. The church, built in 1961 at Sixth Ave and Alexander St, is led by Pastor Rev Kenneth W Book.
The Florida Federation of Women's Clubs will hold its convention in Jacksonville starting Monday, April 13. The theme Our Heritage of Freedom will guide activities. Opening at 9 30 a m Tuesday features the presentation of state officer candidates with Mrs Mark W Emmet Gainesville unopposed for the presidency. The group will study proposed legislation on mail order weapon purchases and consider urging Congress to curb irresponsible buying by mail order.
Mount Dora gains a new Rotary Club charter announced by Rotary International. The group formed earlier this month and plans community service activities in the area.
Mount Dora patients list names a batch at Waterman Memorial Hospital this week. The Mount Dora Library, aided by the Mount Dora Woman's Club, added 45 new books across non fiction and fiction lists. Notable titles include Help Help Help by Booth M Johnson, The Child Worshipers, Return to Cassino, The Wapshot Scandal and Animal Farm, with works by Christie, Orwell, Ford, and Dewey among others.
The Syracuse University Alumni Association of Central Florida met February 29 at the University Club in Winter Park for a luncheon and business session. President Dr. Lester O. Schriver chaired. Chancellor William P. Tolley spoke on university growth. Officers for 1964-65 were Eugene Smith president Chanatry Maitland Pierce LaClaire.
Col J Kenyon Smith of Tavares is announced as 1964 Cancer Crusade Chairman for Lake County by the Lake County Cancer Unit. Roster lists Clermont Captain H G Drake Howey-in-the-Hills and D H Livingston of Eustis. Smith is semi retired and has lived on Lake Harris for three years.
Waterman Memorial Hospital of Eustis becomes the first Lake County facility to earn a one year accreditation from the national American Hospital Joint Accreditation Committee. Staff celebrate the achievement and announce no room rate increases in two years amid ongoing expansion plans.
The Ocklawaha Chapter DAR will hold its regular meeting at the Umatilla Community Building on Thursday April 2 at 2 p.m. Winners of the DAR Awards for Good Citizenship American History Month and Good Citizens will be honored at a tea after the meeting. Parents invited. A music program is planned.
The Lake County Ladies Chorus will hold a luncheon and officer election on Thursday April 9 at the Villa Dora Hotel. Mr and Mrs Vance Keister will be special guests.
Over 600 people attended the Mount Dora Art League outdoor show on Saturday with the junior group from local schools attracting judges J. B. Davison Howard Earl and John Tietjen. Ribbons were awarded to Don Christopher Ronald Alexander Julius Rawson Guy Wills Merriman and others while door prizes of framed paintings went to Clara Thomas Ella M Ellis Helen Hutchinson and R. B. Miller.
