Merchants Plan Finalized for Mount Dora Trading Stamps

The Mount Dora Merchants Association schedules a 7 p.m. meeting at Fralick's Restaurant to finalize a trading stamp plan. A board of directors and a funds manager will be elected or named. participating merchants will issue stamps for every 10 cents of trade and redeem a full book for merchandise value.

The Mount Dora Merchants Association will conduct the annual Easter Egg hunts on Saturday March 28 at Donnelly Park. A session for pre school children is set for 11 a.m. and for school children through the third grade at 1 p.m.

Three Republican candidates vying for county offices under the deadline last Tuesday. Roy Ledford of Mount Dora seeks sheriff, challenging incumbent Willis V. McCall’s Democratic nominee. Walter Baker Ream of Clermont runs for District 3 commissioner against Herman Dykes. Leighton Baker leads the GOP slate in Lake County with Bill Reedy and Bob Skinner seeking the Democratic nomination.

Hurricanes Fall In Class B State Final Tilt

Mount Dora’s Hurricanes lost the championship to Zephyrhills 33 to 29 in Gainesville. The game featured a stalling tactic by Zephyrhills that slowed Hurricanes pace. Ron Mikell, averaging 27.2, was limited to 11 points while Ted Gottfried added nine. Shively 6, Tanner 2, Stewart 2, Dake 5 contributed the remaining scores. The Hurricanes had defeated Malone 54-53 the day before.

Dale W. Miller to Receive BSA Eagle Award

Dale W. Miller son of Mr and Mrs Miller of 849 Grandview Mount Dora will be presented the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Award by E H Pitzer Troop 19 on Saturday March 28 at 7 30 p m in the High School Cafetorium on Highland Street. He began Cub Scouting in Melbourne in 1957 earned the Wolf Badge in 1958 joined Troop 19 in 1959 and advanced through 2nd Class 1st Class Star and Life between 1960 and 1962. Miller has earned 24 merit badges including Order of the Arrow at Camp La Noche in 1963 and a mile swim in June 1963 plus badges in animal husbandry lifesaving home repairs cooking citizenship and more.

Lake County Science Fair Opens This Week Students Sue Range of Exhibits

The second annual Lake County Science Fair runs Thursday at Roseborough Elementary School gym from 3 to 9 p.m. with public viewing, continues Friday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, ten exhibits advance to a state fair in Jacksonville. Elementary entries do not compete.

No Parking Signs Erected on Donnelly Street

Mount Dora police erected no parking signs along Donnelly Street from the Post Office to curb minor accidents. Chief J. T. Huett said several incidents occurred with cars parked there. Parking remains allowed on the west side of Donnelly Street.

Harold Larsen Rejoins Caudel at Texaco Station

Harold Larsen, brother in law, rejoins Robert Caudel in running the Caudel Texaco service station at Fourth Avenue and Donnelly Street. The pair had a 15 year prior partnership before Larsen left for New Smyrna Beach to work in business.

Rep Baker Opposes Proposed Tax on Sports Equipment

State Rep. Leighton L. Baker opposes a 5 percent tax on sports and recreation gear. He helped present a challenge in Leon County court arguing the act is hastily drafted and lacks clear definitions. Wholesalers showed item by item examples raising questions on use and labeling to define taxed goods.

Cross Florida Barge Canal Costs 157 Million Dollars

The Cross Florida Barge Canal project is priced at 157.9 million dollars. It would create a 107 mile waterway from the St Johns River near Palatka to the Gulf near Yankeetown enabling Atlantic Gulf barge traffic. The plan envisions a 12 foot deep St Johns channel from Jacksonville to Palatka then through the canal to the Gulf, cutting 610 miles off the existing route.

Lions Seek White Elephants for Mount Dora Auction

Mount Dora Lions collect white elephants for their annual Barbecue and White Elephant auction set for Saturday March 21 at Gilbert Park. Auction starts 1 PM, dinner at 4 PM with multiple auctioneers and prize drawings including a TV set. Donations requested from Lake Oil, Link Stationery, Rehbaum's Hardware or Triangle Oil with pickup offered through Saturday morning.

City Council Accepts Local Bid For Paving Irregularities Noted

The City Council awarded paving work for the sewerage project to Superior Asphalt Co of Mount Dora at 7521.25 after four bids. Councilman Houser criticized irregularities in the bid. Other actions included lease of city property for a Boy Scout Hut, beach pumping projects, zoning requests, and a street lighting discussion. Mayor Willmott approved two flag poles for City Hall.

Outdoor Art Show At Donnelly Park Slated

Mount Dora Art League sponsors an outdoor art show this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Donnelly Park. Admission is free. A special junior artists group will participate along with neighboring art groups. Four framed oil paintings will be awarded as prizes to ticket holders. tickets are available at a desk on the site.

April 1 Tax Deadlines Set by Lake County Official

Lake County Tax Collector Paul H. Reed announced 1963 taxes become delinquent April 1 with a 3 percent penalty on real estate and 1 percent monthly on tangible and intangible personal property. Delinquent taxes to be advertised April 23. May ads for real estate. tax certificate sale on June 1. 85.67 percent of regular taxes paid, $3,371,416.24 of $3,935,144.03. intangible taxes 96.49 percent paid, $276,887.16 of $286,958.53.
