Area music week offers big bands recitals and symphonic night
Last week in Mount Dora featured Harry James and his 15 man orchestra at the Rotary Club finale, Eva DeMott singing European folk songs at Lakeside Inn, and the Florida Symphony Orchestra in its second Mount Dora appearance under Pavlo Despais. The Kiwanis hosted a breezy program with Wagner and Weber overtures, Bloch dances, Smetana and DeFalla selections, and Bernstein tunes, all amid a cooled but acoustically imperfect Community Building. The season closed with mixed venues and hopeful notes for future performances.

Mount Dora City Council approved survey and test borings on city owned Palm Island The plan by developers Harvey Spears and Allan Jones includes exchanging land they own north of Gilbert Park near the Seaboard Coast Line railroad for Palm Island south of Gilbert Park and Fisherman's Headquarters in the Cove area The eight acre parcels would enable cluster condominium housing priced between 60000 and 80000 per unit with the committee noting feasibility differences from a public park.
