A public meeting on the future of Lake County is set for this Thursday at 7 30 p m in the Bank of Mount Dora community room in Mount Dora. The session will be chaired by community planners and officials.
Mount Dora Jaycees outline final plans for the third annual Fourth of July Jubilee at Gilbert Park. Pancake breakfast runs 7:30 to 10 a.m. with all other activities starting at 10, including bingo, games, and concession stands. Food vendors offer burgers, hotdogs, drinks, cotton candy, and baked goods all day. The event features exhibits by the Mount Dora Historical Society and Ocklawaha Chapter DAR at the Boy Scout House. The King Helie Planning Group, hired by Lake County to draft a countywide development plan, prepares a six month master plan with a budget not to exceed 22 000 and seeks public input for Lake County’s future goals.
The Mount Dora Chamber of Commerce board set a flat $7.50 fee for each group use of the community meeting room under construction. The charge covers maintenance and utilities with no exemptions planned. Remodeling continues on the baggage room next to the Chamber offices in the former Seaboard Coast Line station on Alexander Street.
Winifred Wood Estey, longtime Tangerine resident and church leader, died Tuesday at age 90, having moved from Wimchendon Massachusetts in 1885. She served Tangerine Community Church as treasurer and was past president of local societies.
Mount Dora City Council debated a model shade tree ordinance and heard a delegation protest higher fees for Community Building use. An hours of sale ordinance to beer and wine was enacted on second reading with no opposition. An animal control measure restricting livestock on private property passed as a second reading with one dissenting vote from Councilman Pearson.
Judy Canova, famed radio and film comedienne, visits Mount Dora widow Mrs Isabel deSilva and Mrs Nena Chester. She recalls early career moves, radio stages with Paul Whiteman, and a shift to Republic Studios. She notes fame through state fairs and recent TV work, toy ads, and plans for books or a cookbook.
